Exposure therapy makes it worse. Please look at information from Misophonia International. It sounds silly. Like could you expose therapy your way out of having synesthesia?

Misophonia - my theory, during adolescents and whilst experiencing a distressing hyper emotive event, the person is being attended to or surrounded by these everyday sounds. These sounds then get filed away in the lizard brain, like a doorway to the lizard brain temporarily open due to the emotional event. Even though the emotional event has resolved, the sound is now associated with distress triggering fight or flight responses.
