I believe that we have no other choice but to act rational with the information we extract from our evironment. In that sense we are purely rational just like every other being. We don't act rational out of other peoples viewpoints but have no other choice but to act rational out of our own viewpoint. Further I think that the primary goal shouldn't be to change ones own "bad" behavior (be it being judgemental, Cold or whatever) but rather to really realize it and understand it, analyze what ones motivations were, what such behavior caused and so on. The healthy termination of that behavior is just a juicy side effect, induced by realization and having the resources to terminate.
