Even aside from the legal concerns, getting each person to sign paperwork in a family probably helps each of those members to become more engaged in making changes. When people feel they are actually players in therapy, they’re probably going to be more willing to take action. A person is likely going to think he/she should be doing something if labeled a client. Even for family members that think they didn’t do much that contributed to a problem, they could create amazing change in the family. So getting each family member to feel more engaged is another plus for having each person sign recognizing themselves as a client.
