With the new year comes a new post to host Saturday morning cartoons.

January 15, 2022

"Man's Best Friend" is an episode from the second season of The Ren and Stimpy Show. It was originally intended to air on Nickelodeon as the second half of the second episode of Season 2, however it was pulled and the original theatrical pilot took its place. It eventually aired on Spike TV in 2003.

The episode was deemed controversial for the violent scene where Ren beats George with an oar, along with tobacco references and a joke about feces.

Before eventually being on Spite TV and later on DVD, a bootleg VHS version has made its way around for a number of years. Owing to the number of times it was copied, the quality became very poor.

Below here is a link to a digitized version of that VHS bootleg of that episode.

One issue with the major animation releases of the 1990s was the use of DVNR. Even today, to the more discerning, the effects of digital clean up can be seen with softening of lines, erasing of fingers and toes, and other small details. On my YT channel, I have upload several of the Betty Boop LD rips from the Definitive Collection, which shows these obvious signs of DVNR. Before the Definitive Collection was released, a 2 LD set was released for the 60th anniversary of the cartoon character. These were not touched by DVNR. The Definitive Collection prints appear "cleaner: (i.e., less speckles), but the image is decided less sharp.

The library of congress did a new scan of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. When I was scrubbing through the film, I noticed that it is mostly shot on 2s, which means it would be easy to clean up. Given time (an motivation) I may do that for this film. Until then, here is the high bitrate version of the film: download

A person who goes by the handle of Pacmania67 recently had two Heckle & Jeckle films scanned and put them on his YT channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClzsOvf0_4azKcvOjeTR0kA) Both have original opening titles.
