On my YT channel, I have most of the Harmon & Ising Happy Harmonies. One that I do not have  (because the collector wishes I don't post it) is a Happy Pups cartoon called 'The Pups Christmas' (1936). As far as I know, this is not commercially available anywhere (physical media nor streaming). Here it is, presented in FHD.

I've decided upload the raw scan of the Crusader Rabbit I obtained. As it's only 1 part out of 30, I feel the effort to clean it up is not worth it at this time. I've fixed the brightness level.

On my YouTube channel, I have tried to upgrade as many of MGM's non-Tom and Jerry filmography as possible. I have mostly succeeded. There are few rare films (Count Screwloose, Captain and the Kids) that I have in my possession but the collector who gave them to me will not permit me to release them.

But one character that I do not have on there is Barney Bear, as the copyright on those films are enforced on YouTube (why is beyond me when they permit almost everything else to be shown).

Here are three links of most of the Barney Bear Films. This are FHD rips from Boomerang and from Laserdisc.

I apologize for the delay. I had a family emergency yesterday.

At 10:00am, the restoration for Terrytoons' The Baby Seal will be released for the Restoration Artists tier.

Two more segments from Make Mine Music

Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet: Click Here

This segment told the romantic story of two hats who fell in love in a department store window in New York City. When Alice Bluebonnet was sold, Johnnie Fedora devoted himself to finding her again. They eventually, by pure chance, meet up again and live happily ever after together, side by side. The Andrews Sisters provided the vocals. Like the other segments, it was later released theatrically. It was released as such on May 21, 1954.

After You've Gone: Click Here

This segment again featured Benny Goodman and The Goodman Quartet (Teddy Wilson, Cozy Cole and Sid Weiss) as six anthropomorphized instruments (Piano, Bass, Snare and bass Drums, Cymbal and Clarinet) who paraded through a musical playground.

Here are some of the recent MeTv featured restorations (these have the MeTv watermark)

The segment "Peter and the Wolf" from Make Mine Music is an animated dramatization of the 1936 musical composition by Sergei Prokofiev.

A Russian boy named Peter sets off into the forest to hunt the wolf with his animal friends: a bird named Sascha, a duck named Sonia, and a cat named Ivan. Just like in Prokofiev's piece, each character is represented with a specific musical accompaniment: Peter by the String Quartet, Sascha by the Flute, Sonia by the Oboe, Ivan by the Clarinet, Grandpa by the Bassoon, the shooting of the Hunters' guns by the Kettledrums, and the evil Wolf primarily by horns and cymbals.

A few weeks ago, I uploaded to YouTube a laserdisc rip of the Hanna-Barbera One-Shot Cartoons made fore MGM. A few of these are hard to find these days, especially uncensored. Here is the full, unedited file as YouTube made me edit some segment outs for copyright reasons.

I'm running behind today.

I'll be putting more cartoons here as the day goes when I have time.

The first is Felix the Cat Hits the Deck, a 16mm I just had scanned. No restoration work, but a new, clean scan.

This segment from Make Mine Music featured two rotoscoped live-action ballet dancers, moving in silhouette with animated backgrounds and characters. The dancers are accompanied by two putti, also in silhouette.

This segment from Make Mine Music (Casey at the Bat) is about the arrogant ballplayer whose cockiness was his undoing. The setting is 1902, in the town of Mudville. A few moments are exaggerated or altered and music is added. A sequel cartoon to this segment called Casey Bats Again was released on June 18, 1954.

Columbia release their second volume of 4k film restorations. Included was a bonus disc with new HD transfers of several cartoons, mostly UPA cartoons. However, two Columbia favorites were also included: Little Match Girl and Dog, Cat, Canary. These are the raw blu ray files (.m2ts), not rips from YouTube, so you get good picture quality with a high bitrate.

Also, a DVNR error was discovered in the new Tex Avery Screwball Classics blu ray in Northwest Hounded Police. It's the two scenes that show the US/Canada map; the moving dot was digitally removed by accident. I fix that error, so I'm including the entire cartoon with the fix included.

Here is a clip of the fix: Click here.

I apologize for the delay in getting this up. I was sick last week and now both my children are sick.

Anyway, continuing with Disney's Make Mine Music. This weeks segment is titled "All Cats Join In." Music is played over visuals drawn by an animator's pencil as the action occurred. The scene portrays "hepcat teens" of the 1940s, being swept away by popular music. This segment features some mild female nudity that was edited out in both the US and UK DVD releases, although the film's Japanese home video releases features some mild female nudity intact and uncensored. It is fully restored here.

A lot cartoon goodness has been released recently.

Firstly, last week I introduce Make Mine Music and revealed the first short. The second short is titled Blue Bayou. This segment featured animation originally intended for Fantasia.

In the realm of official restorations, two releases have been given to us, both with the title Screwball Classics: Woody Woodpecker and Tex Avery. I encourage everyone to buy the complete sets as good sales of these volumes will lead to future restorations and new releases.

Pantry Panic is the only Woody Woodpecker film in the public domain.

Jerky Turkey is the only Tex Avery film that WB recognizes as in the public domain (they still claim ownership of Doggone Tired).

Lastly, I decided to include The Crackpot Quail that released with Tex's other MGM work as the official soundtrack has been restored. Amazingly, the simple change of the Quails noise changes just how funny this film is.

Make Mine Music was initially released in theaters in 1946.

During WWII, much of the Disney staff was drafted into the army. Of those that remained, many were called upon by the to make training and propaganda films. As a result, Disney had many unfinished story ideas.

In order to keep their feature film division alive during the war, the studio released six package films including this one, which is made up of various unrelated segments set to music.

Like many other package features of the 1940s, it was never given a wide theatrical reissue. Instead, its distinct segments were separated and released as separate short films or used as segments in various Disney television programs.

Disney will be releasing Make Mine Music and another film for the first time ever on Uncut Blu-rays on November 2, 2021.

However, why wait for a good thing in the future when that good thing can be had now? The film is comprised of 10 segments. The first of those segments is The Martins and the Coys.

The popular (at the time) radio vocal group The King's Men sings the story of a Hatfields and McCoys-style feud in the mountains. The feud is broken up when Grace Martin and Henry Coy, two young people from each side, inadvertently fall in love. This segment was later censored from the film's US video release due to management's objections to the film's depiction of gun use. Here it is presented newly restored and uncut.

Next week we'll get to see Blue Bayou.

This is something I had scanned a few months. It's a duplicate 16mm, which is why many of the lines are faded. Almost all other prints of this floating around the Internet look the same. I had it scanned thinking there might be something I could do to fix the parts that are faded, but whatever that is, I am currently not capable of such an undertaking.

As such, I decided not to do any work on the print, and am presenting here as is for anyone interested.

The motion picture Who Framed Roger Rabbit? rekindled an interest in the Golden Age of American animation.

Roger Rabbit and Baby Herman were featured in a series of cartoon shorts following the popularity of the initial movie. These shorts were presented in front of various Touchstone/Disney features in an attempt to revive short subject animation as a part of the moviegoing experience.

These shorts include Tummy Trouble (1989), released in front of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Roller Coaster Rabbit (1990), shown in front of Dick Tracy; and Trail Mix-Up (1993), shown before A Far Off Place.

Despite being produced by Disney, these shorts contained a heavy slapstick style similar to Looney Tunes and Tex Avery cartoons (Droopy cameos in each one).

Every two month, members of Animation Resources are given access to an exclusive Members Only Reference Pack. These downloadable files are high resolution e-books on a variety of educational subjects and rare cartoons from the collection of Animation Resources in DVD quality.

Last year, Animation Resources released a podcast detailing the timing techniques used to make the Chuck Jones television special “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”. Chuck Jones was a master at controlling the pacing of the action for every single frame of his films. The method of timing cartoons in the golden age of animation is nothing like the way it is done today.

For this week's Saturday Morning Cartoons, I'll be sharing everything from this release.

For the week that I was waiting for my scans to come back, I decided to edit together the two versions of Mel Gibson's film Payback. There's a theatrical version and a directors cut. I added scenes from the directors cut to the original and reorganized the scenes some to make more sense.

This has nothing to do with animation, but figured I'd share it if anyone wanted it.

Last week after releasing Coal Black (#21 in Jerry's book) I thought about showing some of the lesser known films that are featured in Jerry's book.

The Cat Came Back is a 1988 Canadian made film that was featured in theaters along with Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. This also used to be featured prominently on Nickelodeon in between the end and start of their programs.

Bambi Meets Godzilla is considered a cult classic. If it feels like a student film, that's because it is. Made in 1969, it eventually started to be featured in theaters a long with other avant-garde films. Also, if any has $340 to burn, you can buy a 35mm print of this 90 second film here.

Any classic animation fan is familiar with the series of Superman cartoons first started by Fleischer studios and finished by famous studios. Being in the public domain has contributed to their longevity I believe. These shorts were available for the first time in  FHD on WarnerMedia's DC Universe streaming service. However, after the service went down in early 2021, they were no longer available. They have yet to reappear on on HBO Max. Just before the DC streaming service went defunct, I took advantage of their one-week free trial offer to record these Superman cartoons in FHD. After which, I promptly canceled my subscription.

For this week's Saturday morning cartoons, you can download all 17 of theses films in FHD.  Folder: Click Here

Last Friday I received back my scans of Coal Black, Jerky Turkey, and Felix. Work with Coal Black is progressing well and the final version should look very nice. Unfortunately, my print of Jerky Turkey is unusable. I wanted to share it since its bad beyond description.  Download: Click Here

After finally finishing MTM, I left both of my editing laptops at work, so no editing at home. Here is the first disc from Betty Boop the Definitive Collection laserdisc that contains 8 Talkartoons. This is on my YT channel, but this file obviously has not under youtube's compression algorithm.

In anticipation of finishing Minnie the Moocher this week, I wanted to upload two high quality prints of other Talkartoons for this week's Saturday Morning cartoons.   Online there are many prints of this series available, but good quality ones are unfortunately lacking.   These two (The Mysterious Mose and The Robot) are particularly difficult to find decent copies of.  These are ripped from vol 1of the Betty Boop The Definitive Collection laserdisc.

For this week's Saturday morning cartoons, I have compiled all of Tex Avery's MGM films that have never been released on DVD or Blu Ray. Some of these have been restored and aired on MeTV and will eventually end up on Screwball Classics vol. 3.  However, a couple may not due to politically incorrect depictions, only time will tell.  All of these have been sourced from Laserdisc and captured at 1080p.

This compilation includes: Jerky Turkey (has been released on disc, but it's public domain) Uncle Tom's Cabana  Half-Pint Pygmy Lucky Ducky Cock-a-Doodle Dog Cellbound Cat's Meow

June 19, 2021

For this week's edition of Saturday Morning Cartoons, I wanted to share some non-Censored 11 politically incorrect LT/MM cartoons . This is from vol. 3 of the Golden Age of Looney Tunes laserdiscs and is themed around those films that are deemed too offensive today to show, let alone to invest the money to properly restore. With the exception of 1 of these films, none of these have been released since their initial appearance on laserdisc.

I recently recorded this from my laserdisc in full-HD resolution.
