EDIT 07/11/2020 : Added more ideas and also the Foundry VTT file to get the wallsfor the map.

EDIT 06/11/2020 : Added ideas that come up better after a good night of rest ;)

Blaine Ramey asked me to make a maze for his Avernus campaign.
One of his PC is a follower of Keranos who is big into puzzles.
The main puzzle is to open the doors leading to the center room where the boss awaits on his altar. Various small rooms are there to give more puzzles.

IDEAS TO RUN THE MAZE

  • Starting Point

I didn't include any starting point on purpose. You can magically spawn your players where you want and even split them in several groups or have them alone for maximum tension. You can also add doors where you want on the edges.

  • Limited Time

You can have a counter clock ticking magically in the whole maze (add a background sound) with for example a magical barrier that shrinks every now and then (2 minutes) as in Fortnite. Try to take your hand on a hourglass (if you play in real) or have a counter of some sort (if need be remind your players the time remaining aloud every 30 seconds).Or you can have a powerful foe (but a bit dumb) that chase you in the maze. He can loose him easily enough running checks, lure him out, send him into a trap (a magical teleport one), etc.... Knowing a giant Minotaur lurks in the maze after you is quite scary. You can have your players assess his location and proximity with the sound of his poundings on the ground when he walks (run a check). If your PCs are hurt, they can spill blood on the ground, giving away their location to the Minotaur and thus increases his threat. You can have it find the PCs once they reach the center rooms where you have the final battle once all your party is reunited and are finally powerful enough to fight it.

  • Secret Doors

The 2 small rooms near the center have no entrance. They are secret areas that must be revealed by either mechanisms or puzzles. They are the magical devices that generates the clock and barrier system. Accessing these areas allow the players to stop the time and remove the barrier.

  • Puzzles

Add puzzles in rooms. it may be magical ones, mechanical ones and it can even be a NPC that gives a riddle. Getting the answer can give hints and information to how to access the center room, remove the clock and barrier, etc...

Riddles : You can find riddles on this site.

Puzzles : Activate levers in the correct orders, rotate arms of statues, find hidden buttons, dodge traps to reach a key or a lever, etc....

  • Traps

If you're Legend tier, I'll release this month a pack of Trap assets to populate the maze. All sorts of traps can be used but magical ones are cooler.

Teleport Traps : they can teleport players where you want (useful if they run out of time and you want to give them a hand and spawn them closer to a solution). One funny thing would be a the magical circle in the NW room that teleports you randomly in the maze. Roll two D100 to define the coordinates of the tile you're teleported to.

Silence Traps : A cool magical trap would be one that cast silence on your Party thus preventing them from communicating verbally for a time (useful to slow them down if they are too fast and you want to improve the tension).

Mechanical  Traps : spinning blades, poison darts, bolts, etc... in a long corridors.
