Hello! (*ฅ́ ˘ฅ̀*)♡

Recently, my partner generously gifted me a new ipad complete with a proper drawing stand setup (yay for no more neck or wrist pain!). Naturally, I jumped into playing around in Procreate after having spent the last few years nearly exclusively using CSP. Since it's been awhile, there was expected friction and awkwardness while learning my way around the program again. I spent several days familiarizing myself with the layout and tools like I was exploring the inside of a home I just moved into, getting used to the nooks and crannies and figuring out what I could do with the space. I'm learning to embrace the uniqueness of different mediums (even from one digital drawing program to the next, they're all built differently!) and leaning into each one's quirks rather than trying to bend it to fit into a different shape.

I used to love using Procreate and I'm remembering why that was as I use it more and more. The program is quick, compact, and user-friendly and the brush engine and pencil operate very smoothly and intuitively as a result. It may not have as many features as a tool-heavy program like CSP or Photoshop, but the tradeoff is well worth it (a lot of features also means a lot of lag). It reminds me of Paint Tool SAI in many ways, another program known for its minimal layout and no-lag drawing experience that I used for many years (fun fact: the majority of my art from before 2019 was done in SAI!).

Having used several drawing programs now for extended periods of time, I can say that I create differently in each one. I used to think that my techniques/process from one were entirely transferable to another, but that hasn't really been the case. And it makes sense when you think about it in terms of traditional mediums, color pencils look different from watercolors, which look different from oil pastels. I've found old techniques that I used to use all the time resurfacing as I'm drawing in a program that is better suited to them. If no one else got me, I know the Procreate smudge tool got me. 👌

Note: last 2 images were done in CSP, the rest was in Procreate

I really like Procreate for drawing on the iPad…not that I do it very often, but it is pretty incredible, even if it lacks in some features. Your sketches, as always, are so much fun to see. Also, happy to hear you have a proper setup now for your iPad drawing 😊

it's such a snappy well-designed program and useful for a range of skills! i'm so impressed by it's capability and what they have managed to include in its default setup. hehe thank you so much tim and i'm happy about it, too! gone are the wretched days of shrimping at my desk...😌

new ipad hittin!! 😳 of course, it's this bad boy right here (https://shop.sketchboardpro.com/products/sketchboard-pro-for-ipad). it's honestly a huge improvement and i haven't had any issues with neck/back/wrist pain since i started using it which is GREAT. 🤭 the desk height could also be contributing to the shrimping, the stand helps accommodate that cos the ipad sits higher up so you don't have to look down at an extreme angle. gentle on the wrist, too. omg i didn't even know the name cos i just found it on pinterest, but it does look like it! your eye for lolita dresses is SHARP, so impressive. 👀
