Hello! (ㅅ´ ˘ `)

To celebrate 1 month since my Patreon's reopening, here's the speedpaint of one of the promotional drawings I did. You can see just how simple and messy it starts out. xD It always amuses me how all art begins as an idea inside our heads and grows and evolves on the page/instrument/stage into something tangible we can interact with and appreciate.

Program: Clip Studio Paint

Tools: XP Pen Innovator 16

Some notes on what I was doing:

  • At 0:10 I make the drawing small then big again because for me it feels better to sketch on a smaller canvas size. There's usually less program lag/brushes move more smoothly at smaller sizes, so the speed and ease helps me lay down the building blocks of a drawing before even considering details.
  • 1:01, I love using gradients to lay down quick colors. A simple gradient can evoke so much emotion and movement, a wonderful tool for maximum impact!
  • 1:18, changing the color of the lineart layer (done by lock transparent pixels button in CSP) is another small change that has a big effect! It can transform the softness/hardness, temperature, and lighting of a drawing. It's an easy technique I often use to make artwork look more cohesive.

Watching this back, I'd definitely make some changes. I'd play around with curves at the end to bump up saturation and play around with color balance. I'd also make the impact of the light source stronger and more dynamic. Lastly, I'd consider throwing a gradient map on top to see if I could inject more interesting color interactions.

I've attached the video, which you can find at the bottom of this post, so you can download it for viewing offline.

Hope you have a good day! 💗

this is so cool! it's wild to see how quickly something goes from being a sketch on the page to a full realized piece. obviously it's sped up but i feel like there's some kind of moment where it just clicks in and you know you've got the right look in that moment. i especially love the sheen on the hair...so cool

thank you taylor! o( ˶^▾^˶ )o ikr? our other chat about artistic influences and the magic of art helped me appreciate the creative process in a new way. i love process stuff for this reason, you get insight into the ideation/brainstorming/scrapped concepts that are absent when viewing the finished piece. stuff is always changing in the making, it really feels alive in that sense!

so amazing to see one of your process videos again! makes me extra happy that you are back here on Patreon…I always loved seeing how your illustrations take shape…all the little choices and corrections you make as you move through the process! just love this, Vicki!!!

ohh i'm glad you like it tim! :D i'm really enjoying being back as well, thank you for encouraging me to keep going! haha i'm actually having fun watching them back, too. i used to feel embarrassed about capturing my process (ppl can see all my mistakes and fumbling!), but i'm realizing that it's actually interesting to see how something came together and it's a great tool for learning and improving skills as well. ^^
