Does this theory still hold up with newer research findings? I read an article that said otherwise Pinto, Y., et al. "Split Brain: Divided Perception but Undivided Consciousness." Brain (London, England : 1878), vol. 140, no. 5, 2017, pp. 1231-1237.

so i guess we're moving from educational to more and more unsettling

Free will video in the works? I'm drooling with excitement already! (Not that I have a choice in the matter...)

Is this actual CGP Grey footage? Jumping on the cortex bandwagon that you already have multiple video styles. Your writing & voice are your signature.

I wasn't expecting that crossover. Looks great

matt

is that footage from an actual experiment performed with someone whose hemispheres have been isolated that way?

Jesse Thompson

Right. Does this mean you're starting to work out some of the puzzles you discovered and shared in the Transporter / Ship of Thesus video and are catching up with the rest of the class now? Every intelligent entity is legion. A superorganism of simpler, coordinated, self-interested actors. From multi-cellular humans to nations to beehives to neural networks: parallel processing is required to overcome the serial limitations inherent in any attempts to simulate and thus adapt to our environments. The sense of "Self" is never a crown that has rested upon a single discrete head, and it never will. As a result, you + transporter duplicate (presuming you survive the petulant "uniqueness" dissonance so many face and Cmdr Riker from TNG demonstrate in two different episodes.. and Alfred Borden from The Prestige did a slightly better job overcoming) are the same person, slowly diverging into potentially two different people in precisely the same manner as two branches forking from a trunk are the "same" tree. Cut down the tree, graft or replant each branch to get two different plants and to the extent our language allows us to say so, these are still basically the same tree just disjointed into two different environments. Of course we do this in agriculture all the time, but I don't know a unique word for it. "Cultivar" is too broad to apply to this specific situation, but suggests the appropriate direction to look. I'll shortcut to the answer of the riddle, and the superior moral calculus it reveals. 1: "You" are defined wholly, "uniquely" as far as that word applies, and thoroughly by nothing more nor less than your intentions. What you want defines 100% of who you are. When you and another physical being want 100% the same thing down to the final detail, you are as morally identical as two particles sharing quantum state (read up on Bose-Einstein condensates for more examples there). 2: As a corollary, just as you are literally an organization of smaller pieces (right brain, left brain, right arm, left leg..) and no part of you desires harm to any other part, which obviously shares a stupidly high correlation of intention, you (the homo sapiens animal and tax paying citizen, etc) are also a member of larger groupings of beings. Family, friends, neighborhood, volunteer groups, maybe church, loose political and ideological affiliations, fandoms, state, country, species, biosphere. 3: Serving the needs of any of these larger groupings, at least up to and including in the manners that these groupings forward your interests, do forward your interests more powerfully than you the homo sapiens could ever do independently of them. Otherwise, why would you maintain the association at all? This is even true for infiltrating spies, for pete's sake! :P 4: Take the central dogma of Hedonism and alter it only by redefining "Self" as described above: to include every part of you and every grouping of which you are a part, to the degree that they align with your interests and needs. You are left with, to my knowledge, an utterly flawless moral code: Hedonism minus all of it's well known flaws and shortcomings which utterly rewards more complex notions such as empathy and teamwork. A superior script to "self-sacrifice" being the recognition that your "self" extends beyond your physical body, yet still not blindly to all things. A code that explains both appropriate self-investment and dying for a cause without even stopping for breath between them. Feel free to challenge the supremacy I claim for point 4, I've been putting it to every test I can think of both in theory and in practice for 9 years now and I still can't break it. :3
