In the cartoon, Sokka and Katara got sick and Aang needed swamp frogs for them to suck on so they'd get better. Since its live action and people can't be sucking on frogs, they chose to have Sokka and Katara captured in the spirit world and Aang has to go on his quest to find a way to rescue them.

To be somewhat fair to the actor playing Aang I've had a few moments with all of the actors, even some of the more experienced ones like Daniel Dae Kim or Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, where I've cringed 😬 a bit and thought "that's the best performance they could get for this scene?" I do generally agree it's worse with Aang's actor and everyone else generally gives pretty solid performances though. I just also think some of it might be the directors not being able to get a good performance out of the actors at times.
