You know I think this would've made for a great trilogy showcasing the evolution of the Future War to what we see in the T3 Flash forwards. I adore the whole synth retro futuristic 1980s depiction of the war from the original movies but for timeline reasons it makes sense that Salvations would look very different. From being set in a timeline where Judgment Day happened in 2004 not 1997 so its slightly more modern looking in the equipment used to being early in the Future War timeline so no Purple or Red Lasers. I imagine the sequels would've dived closer to a Neon Future War but I guess we'll never know. Overall this film grew up me. It originally was going to be more like Aliens but change in director and direction it became more like Michael Bay Transformers meets Terminator. I think I would've preferred the Aliens feeling film lol On you're timeline question this film does take place after the events of Terminator 2 and Terminator 3 where Sarah Connor delayed Judgement day to 2004 in T2 and then Arnold protected John Connor and his future Wife in T3 leading up to this film. Timeline so Far: Terminator 1 - 1984 | Future War 2029 (Skynet Defeated) Terminator 2 - 1995 | Judgment Day - 1997 (Delayed) Terminator 3 - 2004 | Judgement Day - 2004 | Future War 2033 (Alternate Future War) Terminator Salvations - Opening 2003 | Future War 2018 (Future War from T3) So pretty much this is a whole new future from the one Kyle originally came from in Terminator 1 from how he meet John Connor to the fact the Future War began later in 2004. The original timeline also did not have Marcus Wright so Kyle would never of met John Connor in relation to Marcus just stuff like that slight changes between the original Future War and the one depicted in this film. Also John Connor was killed in 2032/2033 stated in Terminator 3 so we know this Future Wars goes beyond 2029 the original date when Skynet was defeated and sent back a T-800 to kill Sarah Connor. With this information I imagine John will keep his guard up and hopefully be able to defeat Skynet and then send Kyle back to 1984.
