Totally agree with you Holden on the point of the negative perception of Catholics, or religious people in general, to make them bad people or ignorant/unintelligent in movies and tv. It’s a trope that continues to bother me. Ideology aside, I did love the episode otherwise. Great show.

The voice actor that plays video game Joel is in this episode! He’s David’s right hand man - James! Props to Troy Baker! I also hear it’s fun for some actors to get a bloody death 😂

I didn't see it as a crazy religious guy. I don't think it was a knock on religion at all. I think it was showing how it can be weaponized in a post apocalyptic setting. I think they were showing a guy (David) who saw an opportunity to take advantage of good and desperate people by using religion to be in power. The sign saying he shall provide isn't talking about God. It's talking about David. David even adds that it wasn't God that showed him the truth, it was the cordyceps. Will add that if you haven't already, definitely listen to the after show podcasts with the show and game creators and hosted by Troy Baker aka Joel in the game and James in the show. Definitely gives a lot more understanding oh like "oh I see what you were doing with that" or "ok so I was right thinking that was what was happening". Also goes into the changes from the game and why they decided to do things definitely.

I didn’t take it as a knock on religion at all. I think when David says he “found God” it was as a weapon to use for power. Like a god complex. Another reason he referred to himself as the girl’s “father”.
