Ayyye best part of this movie is the skrulls

Bull Watterson

How did he eat his sandwiche on average AOU

I think this one is pretty okay. It reminds me a lot of the Phase 1 origin films. It’s probably the 2nd worst Phase 3 film after Ant-Man And The Wasp. One of the funniest things about this film is that everyone is telling Carol to control her emotions and yet she is completely straight-faced the whole film.

Jamie Tartt

Film is solid for the most part. Love the Skrulls twist and Carol and Fury banter. Hopefully under a new direction for The Marvels they nail Carol as a character. She is for the most part great in Endgame. Also just asking when are we gonna get the full endgame reaction.

Anonymous

Yeah that was defiantly part of the movie that lets it down. That they didn't really nail the emotional arc for Carol. When she arrives on Earth I would have liked her to appear more unsure, curious, even scared, etc. But they treated it more indifferent until she discovered something. It kinda just falls flat in that regard. The third act is really fun and well done imo. So if they had a more emotional arc in the first two acts it would be been a much better payoff. I always found it funny that they hired two directors that got their start on small indie films and Brie Larson who has mainly done indie dramas and the films strongest parts are its action and joke scenes and weakest parts is the emotional core, which should be indie film makers bread and butter.

Hey Holden just a thought for the full Endgame.....would it be possible to try it as an unlisted YT video and obviously not public?

Philip Toscano

The sacred timeline decrees that Endgame is next!

Christian Holzer

The de-ageing tech in Captain Marvel is just insane. I like the movie, its entertaining. :) Btw. hope you watch at least Season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D it's juicy ;)

Steven Kuit

Problem is the audio. A lot of reactors that do this use headphones, but since Holden is (I assume) watching it on his TV that's not really possible.

I actually really think Jen would like Agents if Shield!! I am not a huge fan of season 1 but I got super into it after that. Specifically seasons 3-5 really work for me and I thought the final season was a great homage to the shows history.

Dani

I cannot wait for Endgame!!!!

I've always felt the whole thing with Brie was way overblown - what she actually said was that she 'didn't care what some old white dude had to say about what didn't work for him about A Wrinkle in Time' which is fair enough - it's a diverse, empowering movie for little girls. The wording was a little unfortunate perhaps, but the message is valid. She did seem a little awkward during those interviews, sure, but I've been watching her YouTube channel for a while now (which is surprisingly wholesome and I do recommend it) and it's clear to me that's she just a little introverted and socially awkward at times, which explains the poorly formulated arguments and her weird sense of humour. I am by no means a Brie Larson stan and actually started watching her YouTube videos 'ironically' because I bought into the whole anti-Brie narrative, but having seen most of them it finally clicked for me why she acts the way she does and how that might come across during interviews/press tours.

Totally agree! Captain Marvel is my least favorite MCU movie but I don’t think it has anything to do with Brie Larson and more to do with the material she had to work with. I also think for an introvert it would be uncomfortable to come into such a tight knit community of existing friendships at the very end. I think a lot of the awkward interview moments are just Brie trying to be funny and mess around with the other actors (in the same way that this group is always poking fun and fake throwing shade at each other) except her jokes are a little cringe and didn’t land.

Derek Willerton

Definitely watch Agents of Shield! The first season is one you'll kind of have to be patient with. It's very much a character building season, due to them waiting for a specific movie to come out so they could do their big twist. But after that, AoS is top tier tv all the way through to the end. It's one of my favorite shows of all time, even if it's not technically canon anymore

Jen, thank you for your military service! I’m a retired Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. I’m also one of those who enjoyed Captain Marvel. Is it the best MCU film? No, but it’s far from the worst in my opinion. The movie made $1.13B worldwide at the box office. It’s the 10th highest grossing comic book movie of all time and the third highest origin story (behind Black Panther and Aquaman). Brie Larson is a great fit for Carol Danvers and I look forward to seeing her in The Marvels.

The movie isn't good at all. Slow, boring, no stakes. She is unbeatable with no weakness. The character has no motivation . We don't car. The bad guy was predictable. Everybodies favorite parts are a cat and fury. What an indictment on how crappy carols character and the story was. The whole story was about her emotions, yet she showed none. It was a waste of time, in my opinion.

Endling_king

its easy to miss but when Fury is talking to Danvers in the bar telling her something only Fury would know. he says "if toast is cut diagonally i cant eat it" HOWEVER, if you rewatch the scene in Age of Ultron when Fury is talking to the avengers in Hawkeyes kitchen, you see him eating diagonally cut toast. which some say is because that fury in Age of Ultron is a Skrull pretending to be Fury.

Damn. I had high hopes that Jen would like this movie but she didn’t like it as much as I hoped. I always feel like an outsider when it comes to this movie because I loved it. I thought it was fantastic. It’s one of my favorite movies in the MCU. I don’t have the same mindset as other people where they feel the need to rank the movies or say this one was better than that one or this one was bad. I felt every single MCU movie was good. I just happened to enjoy some more than others. Usually the ones that take place in space or have aliens are the ones that I end up liking more because even in comics those are the stories that I enjoy more. The Earth-based stuff don’t do as much for me. I’ve rewatched this movie several times and I will agree with Jen on this one point…I wish we got to see her powers more. The movie ended with me wanting to see more. I’m not going to mention anything from Endgame because spoilers. Kind of disliked the part where Holden threw in Goku’s quotes to Frieza when he went Super Saiyan but no big deal. It’s his video so he can do whatever he wants. I know a lot of people hate Brie Larson and that’s their prerogative. I have no such feelings towards her. I don’t pay attention to those kind of things. Just because the actor said some stupid things, as we all do from time to time, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the movie. If that was the case then we shouldn’t watch any Mel Gibson movies because of the things he said. I remember listening to people having conversations with friends who had never seen an MCU movie but wanted to get into them and they actually told their friends to skip Captain Marvel. I was like “WTF?” Whatever their reason was I would NEVER tell someone to skip a movie in a franchise. The same applies to video game franchises. I’ve also had people give me shit personally because my daughter’s favorite superhero is Captain Marvel. They were trying to get me to manipulate her into liking another character. I was so annoyed. Tony Stark and Darth Vader are two characters that I personally despise but if my daughter was a fan of them I would never tell her not to like them just because I didn’t. She should be allowed to discover what she likes for herself. After all, she’s only 7 years old. I love having conversations with her about it. Sometimes when she picks up something heavy or she helps me move something I’m like “Wow! You’re so strong!” To which she replies “Yes, like Captain Marvel!” It’s so cute. I didn’t know who Brie Larson was when this movie came out and I thought she did a good job with the role. I’m really excited for the sequel. Again, I don’t want to mention too much because I don’t want to spoil anything for Jen. Endgame is up next and I can’t wait.

I didn’t enjoy the last few seasons, especially since they pretty much said they were no longer following the events of the films and they were doing their own thing. I disagreed with that stance completely. But I hate that it’s not considered canon anymore because I remember that one season that set up Age of Ultron and explained how The Avengers knew where to find Loki’s scepter. Also, Quake is a badass character and I still want to see her in the movies played by the same actress. She was by far my favorite part of the show. Oh, and Ghost Rider too.

Anonymous

I feel like you guys got it pretty much spot on with the 6.5 review. Pretty average film overall but it was a decent way to introduce the character. Probably won't ever really watch it again unless I'm working my way through all of the MCU films.

Anonymous

Holden, perhaps Jen would find it interesting to see each MCU movie's gross at the box office. CBR.com has Captain Marvel ranked as ninth highest gross. Black Panther was the highest grossing 'solo' movie. The four above Black Panther are the four 'ensemble' movies.

Benjamin Segura

Loved this reaction! Hopefully you do an End Game watch along like infinity war, that would be amazing!

Andrew Nickerson

Great reaction, as usual. I agree with both of you on this one. I enjoyed the movie, but it wasn't my favorite. I never understood the Brie Larson hate. My criticisms are with the writing of her character, not her portrayal.

Kyle O'Sullivan

Hey Holden. Wanted to share where this movie ranks for me. Pretty much toward the bottom end of the MCU movies though I did enjoy it as a starting solo film. I have it ranked 19/23 ahead of Iron Man 2 and 3, Hulk and Thor Dark World. I really enjoy the reactions and hearing different inputs and criticisms for all the movies. Very fun to argue/agree with your takes (as well as Jens) through the screen in a funny way. Can’t wait for the rest of the marvel journey until you fully get Jen all caught up and excited for what ideas the future holds after you have caught up
