This is officially my least favourite post ever.

Due to contractual requirements around Kindle Unlimited, I am going to have to take down the book 1 chapters (1-113) from Patreon. This will not affect new chapter releases in any way but it will impact the availability of the PDF bundles. I intend to get a new PDF bundle for the remainder of volume 1 out today and (finally) get the cleaned-up volume 2 bundle out as quickly as I can.

I am currently in discussion with my publisher on ways to restore availability, but this is an early-stage discussion and it will take some time to make any progress on that front. We have to move carefully due to the legal and contractual ramifications of getting it wrong.

I'm sorry this post is such a bummer. I was hoping to avoid this but keeping the early chapters available is more complicated than I originally hoped.

I'll keep you updated as I have more information.

Do what you have to do for the contract

Nicholas Pankratz

Sorry to hear that. Contracts can be tricky like that, but I hope everything turns out well for you. Thanks for the update and thank you for the story, nonetheless

Anthony Arredondo

Most people understand what it means to be on KU. Thanks for the heads up post though.

Corwin Amber

Do you what you need to for the contract. I read several authors that post chapters on patreon and this is the same thing they all have to do. Better to have to take it down and get a great book on amazon than to end up in a legal battle with them (which even if you did win, you'd somehow lose enough to not really win at all).

Aaron

Understood. Folks can catch the first volume in the wild now (and edited too), so that's not really the end of the world.

Mislandor

Shirt - This is to be expected - Amazon is pretty strict about it - frankly as long as you post the bundles - then take it down - I would not have an issue. Heck - I already bought your book earlier today when you posted it was live. You got to make a living my friend! Congratulations btw!

Shirtaloon

I appreciate the understanding. While I obviously want to make a living at this, given it is my sole source of income, I want to be as fair as possible to all the people who have supported me thus far, along with those who choose to do so in the future.

Michael scott

Perfectly understandable. I knew it would happen as soon as I saw it was going on Amazon. I've heard it happen from several authors I've read before. Doesn't really effect me at all.

Anonymous

Sucks, but maybe you can translate the PDFs to a kindle coupon code or something that lets people who have donated x amount essentially get a copy of the book free through Amazon? Like a steam key or something maybe.

Shirtaloon

I'm looking into various options with my publisher, but I'm not going to make any promises until I have something I can definitely deliver.

Bobby B.

As I understand it, and obviously I'm not an author, as long as all the chapters are locked behind a paywall of some sort, you should be golden

Doodlyboy15

Kindle/ the publisher probably has some kind of clause saying the author can only distribute through them so having them up somewhere, paid or otherwise would be the issue. They don't want anyone else 'selling' the work, even if it's the author and even if they had it up before the deal.

Matthew A Baker

Yeah, I would imagine some kind of exclusivity clause... this is the same reason ASN no longer does HWFWM chapters on his channel

william wallace

Been expecting this to happen since the kindle announcement. Just downloaded it and looking forward to going back through the early chapters. I’m happy to keep supporting you. If you can get them back up here great, if not I’m good with that too. Thanks for the wonderful world you have dreamed up.

Soah

Whatever works out for you! Happy for your contract with KU.

KU really isn't that expensive all things considered. If people are here supporting you on Patreon, they are probably book junkies and have KU anyways.

Alex C

Money in your pocket let's you keep writing, don't apologize for making a living.

Ethan

Question, will these chapters still be available on the other free sites, such as RR?

adam1

You can usually leave up some percentage of the book as a teaser. I have read several KU books that leave up the first 20% or so to serve as a launch point for new readers (I usually find them that way on RR and then go to KU when I reach the end of the teasers), then it skips to content not available on KU. If you can, leaving up as much as possible will serve you in good stead as advertising.

Termac

It's on Kindle Unlimited, so no, that would be against Amazon's terms.

Anonymous

Some other authors in this same situation usually post their work to Patreon until they get to the end of a book, then post an epub or PDF until the book actually publishes on Kindle, then take it down, while putting up the chapters of the next book.

Anonymous

I'm gonna be a bit honest. I think its great that you are getting published, good for you. Congrats. :). Since you are puling content I'm probably gonna stop supporting you and go for RR or buy the books as they get published. If you were only scraping by I'd understand. But you are not, you're earning a lot. $17k per month is quite hefty. With publishing, its not like you need it. I have a budget for this. I'd rather use it on someone who really need the support.

Shirtaloon

There should be a teaser of the first mini-arc coming to the free platforms soon.

Shirtaloon

That's a perfectly understandable response. Thank you for the support up to now.

Had KU back when it first started up and wow was that a nightmare, pluss I've read a few authors who have had such a bad experience (things like this only on Amazon bs, other people trying to claim copyright on their stuff, weird tax hoops they had to jump thru, among other things) from their end that they ended up pulling all their stuff off amazon entirely. I've never quite gotten up the nerve to try it again. I'd rather just buy the book than deal with all that mess. I'm definitely still supporting you here tho. I like the discussion that happens in the comments too much, and honestly I find it fascinating interacting with the mind behind the book, if even just a little like this.

Thiassi

I don't know how this is unfortunate, since it clearly must have been your informed decision to pull content from your Patreon in favor of the Amazon deal. I view this membership as worse than it was previously as a result of no longer being able to reread the chapters from the beginning, therefore I am no longer going to support you financially. That being said, I wish you the best of luck with this story and as an author going forward.

Sam Baker

Congrats on getting published mate - just means I'll be reading it on kindle instead. Love your style - keep living the dream.

Shirtaloon

I'm sorry to see you go but I completely understand. Thank you for your support thus far.

Drew Ewing

Hey Shirt how does KU work in terms of supporting you? I have it and use it often but wasn’t sure on this. Like for your book if i download it from KU does that help? is it better for me to download and instantly return, or download and leave in my KU for a few months? or just reread it on there then return? i did. just skip to the end and leave a review, but wasn’t sure if there was more to do past that in terms of keeping/returning the book. congrats btw!

Shirtaloon

At the risk of sounding like I'm in an infomercial, that's a great question, Drew. If you're going to leave a review, make sure you download the book first so the review counts as verified. As for reading practices, pages read is what helps the author (in this case, me) out the most. So, if you're looking to do a reread, doing it in KU really helps me out. Plus, it's the the best, edited version of the story.

Midjji

Its a simple black or white issue, did you sell the copyright, or not. If yes then you have no rights what so ever, but should have gotten paid more. If no then do as you like and ignore their suggestions. You can always renegotiate and should have been in s great position. Now authors are often idiots and sign things they shouldn't. If this happened to you then ask for a lawyer among your fans.if you weren't and simply took the better paid deal then stand for that, don't make excuses...

Midjji

I agree, also you have a most excellently chosen name if I do say so myself

Anonymous

I understand why you had to take the chapters down to follow the contract, but im kinda annoyed that you didnt give us a headsup so we could download the chapters in question for rereading. A contract is a contract, nothing to do about that, but i assume you signed it? Did you not understand what you signed? I hate to be that guy, and i wish you all the best on the amazon book "deal", but this could have been handled better imo.

Hunter Vook

Well we knew it was coming, it's not like this is a new part ov amazon TOS.

Nematrec

A pity, I was going to reread the first volume. Guess it wasn't meant to be. However there's something you can do if you want to keep this story up in totality. Simply publish it on normal amazon/kindle instead of amazon/kindle unlimited.

Shirtaloon

It's true that I could have handled this better and I apologise for that. I was led to believe that resolving this issue would be simpler than it is turning out to be and that is absolutely my fault for not having a better understanding of exactly what was going on. I made some mistakes, as I am new to all this, but all I can do is try do do a better job going forward. I'm sorry.

IWannaBeATiger

Ngl didn't realize you weren't planning on taking it down.

Dee

This is par for the course with KU. I’ve seen other authors go this route with similar trials and tribulations, but as far as I know KU has never budged one their exclusivity agreements. They’ll likely also demand you pull the first volume from RR as well.

Dee

That said, I hear it’s hard to beat the sales/exposure you get out of KU. Milk it for what it’s worth and just release the ebook on Amazon without KU when you feel like you don’t need their platform. Good luck! Still rooting for you!

Clarke

Any update on the volume 2 bundle? I searched on PDF, Bundles, Bundle, Volume 2 and couldn’t find the old bundle….

Shirtaloon

The vol. 2 bundle post should now be available for iron rank patrons. Sorry about the delay.
