Welcome to my personal anime of the year in 2023 (and I say that as a big JJK fan). This first episode is pretty deep and depressing and I'm pretty sure you'd have to be soulless to NOT cry lol. But believe me when I say this anime has a little bit of everything and carries a wide appeal. Also the MUSIC, oh my god.

Yay!!! I loved this. Very excited to watch you experience this show. On the names - I wouldn't stress too much about pronunciation. The names of each character in this show is a German word (I encourage you to look the translations up if you are curious!) so going with a western pronunciation is perfectly fine imo.

Keep an eye on the characters name, each of them have a meaning. Their names are german words like frieren= freezing, himmel=sky, fern=far away. (How do I know this, I'm from germany and their names are kinda like their personality)

The little girls name is Fern pronounced like the plant, all the charcater names in this show are actually German words the author found relevant to the character it's a cool story telling device

I could tell your tears were coming your checks and nose got more and more red lol. In season 1 they do time skips by how many years it's been after Himmels death. It will always show in top right.

The first four episodes were aired all together, like a movie, just to keep in mind when considering the pacing here at the beginning. Frieren is a very heartfelt show - you're really going to love it.

Glad that you enjoyed the first episode and cried at that part just like the rest of us xD Not sure if you know exactly who Himmel's VA is yet, but you've actually heard him in 2 big shows already. Dude's got range LOL The animation and soundtrack to this series is just phenomenal, and goes well with the subtle visual storytelling.

Watching this show as I entered my 30s, I was lamenting all my past friendships that I failed to maintain (because sometime life gets in the way.) and since then I’ve been reaching out to friends I haven’t spoken to in years. Also, Flexie, you definitely ARE an elf. I would 1000% believe that you have pointed ears under those headphones.

Evan Call OSTs are some of the best in modern anime. If you ever want to feel like you’re on an adventure and/or cry your eyes out, his Frieren and Violet Evergarden soundtracks are on Spotify.

IM SO EXCITED you’re starting this show because of how much you pay attention to characters and plot in general instead of the usual just watch and drop your jaw when a fight scene comes on lol. But this has some of the best slice of life and moments of interaction between characters and the world I’ve seen in awhile, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

One of those rare anime where the dub is just a good as the sub. You will definitely want to keep tissues close for this series lol. The ending song alone is enough to make me emotional.

Since someone else already gave Frieren, Himmel & Ferns names translations, I (also German) will give the other ones :) Eisen means iron (the dwarf) and Heiter can mean cheerful, or, more fitting for this character, merry, as in slightly drunk.

Himmel means, sky? My father used to watch these dreadful WW2 shows in which the Germans were always declaring, "Gott in himmel!" I thought it meant, heaven: God in heaven. I guess it's pretty much the same, conceptually, but I'm pleased to know the correct translation after all these years of assuming I knew and not bothering to look it up lol. It's good to learn it now especially, after I genuinely thought I was dying from a heart attack on the past 2 days... you know... just in case I do actually die... and there happens to be a god or gods... and they happen to be German lol. It's best I get the address right at least!

Just for completeness: I was watching a reaction by a German gentleman yesterday and he said Himmel means both sky and heaven. that's cool. I'm always happy to learn something new.
