You're definitely meant to be confused. :D re: where they are in the end there, they can only go 33 years thru the portal, so they are in the same year as the future in normal world, it just looks very different.

Assuming he's done similar things in the other world, Helge is a time traveller, he has that pendant, Charlotte found a newer looking pendant that looks the same in the bunker. In the original timeline, Helge when seeing Ulrich in the nursing home bed in S1 panicked and was saying 'It was him! It was him!" meaning the scary dude that mashed his ear in in when he was a kid, of course that had not happened for Ulrich yet. It's safe to assume maybe his reaction in this timeline was something similar.
