I think one reason for that (all the twists and turns), apart from just building suspense, is for the showmakers to encourage us to think twice and try to look at everything from more than one perspective. I like how it´s sort of a lesson in empathy and impulse control, but still it doesn´t feel preachy.

That's a really good point, it makes it a lot more enjoyable as well. Not being able to predict something in a show makes it 10x more enjoyable for me and this episode had me questioning so much!
