I think you might feel at the end of the series that your expectations may be reached and perhaps surpassed. Your instincts could be on point with it being of a similar calibre to series 1. Where as 2 and 3 had slightly more dip points, comparatively. Series 4 is maybe more solid as a whole. Donna IS the best companion, we are in agreement there as well. Donna's Grandad, played by the late Bernard Cribbins. RIP to a beloved legend. He has been in Doctor Who before. Perhaps you later remembered him from the Christmas Special, where he was the news paper stand proprietor. He was also in a non canon film from the 60's. 'Doctor Who' was played by big screen legend Peter Cushing. His depiction is not an in show chronological regeneration. There were two films with Peter Cushing and there are a number of aspects that are not aligned with the the show. Speaking if Doctor Who films, there is one that is canon, made in 1996. It bridges Classic and NuWho. While it was the first attempt to reignite the show, but unsuccessfully. While the story itself isn't narratively significant, it's good to know that it exsists. As somewhere down the line, you'll be asked to watch something that references it. Not for a long while yet though.

Donna's grandad played by Bernard cribbins was in the previous episode Christmas special voyage of the dammed that was in the news paper stand. If you go back and rewatch it you'll notice. Donna's one of the best companions of all time in doctor who, that fact also her relationship with the doctor is strictly plantonic unlike rose and Martha makes this series 4 so good. I have no doubt you'll enjoy the rest of series 4.
