The giraffe being an insert for the audience is a fun twist that makes sense in the context of the story. I'm always a big fan of when characters' names mean something to the story Hikari means light and she is Karen's light (glimmer). Oh! I meant to mention this when I mentioned the OVAs but there is also a recap movie (rondo rondo rondo) while I'd say you should skip it since it's almost all the same content with the same animation the last 8 minutes (timestamp 1:51:50 forward) is new content that takes place after the anime and leads into the sequel movie. While not necessary to watch at all, will probably give you some questions and more excitement for the sequel if you think you'd want to check it out beforehand.
