The time limit is 1 week, on the last day they need to present themselves on the starting point with a total of 6 points to be allowed in the boat to pass. Your own tag is worth 3 points so to be able to pass you need to get your target tag ( 3 points) or three randoms ( 1 point each) them you need to protect those points until the last day. So your assumptions is correct if you lose your tag you have time to recover it or hunt randoms to get the 6 points. Something like 6 random tags or 3 random + target its all the same what matters is to have 6 points in the last day.
