"Ridden hard and put away wet" is about a horse. Horses, like humans, sweat under exertion and if a horse has been ridden hard you need to take care to dry it or it will catch diseases, often dying. The saying basically means that somebody has been used hard but whoever did the using took no care of them and did not care about them. It is a way to describe abuse, basically.

I have Crohn's disease and was diagnosed at age 42; it usually does get diagnosed in childhood, but sometimes older adults can develop it, and so suddenly that you can be out of commission for months on end and almost die. That's how it was for me, anyway. It's also possible that her disease was kept in check for some time with immunosuppressants and biologics (e.g., Remicade, Humira), and then suddenly they stopped working for her, requiring an emergency intestinal resection. Anyway, I had the same suspicions as Liz when I first heard about her obviously unscheduled abdominal surgery, and I didn't even know about the secretary with the connection to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation.

Not sure if this has been answered yet, but as someone with Crohn’s who was first misdiagnosed as UC, and having a twin with UC I can tell you the only difference is the that Crohn’s had the ability to spread from the esophagus to the colon. While ulcerative Colitis doesn’t have the ability to spread. Also I started having symptoms at 12 while my brother didn’t have any until 25.
