I think Kantbot and Edburg’s episode on the History of Systems theory (and tangentially the history of cybernetics) on the Pseudodoxology podcast is good supplementary listening to what Liz is getting at at the end of this podcast. Decentralized networks aren’t designed to be Democratic, they are designed to be totalitarian without effort. The powers at be can design a system and the parameters that reward and punish its subjects so that the subjects themselves police and protect the systems that subjugates them. A bit off subject but the reason the internet is a tool of surveillance and control is the same reason crypto will be used to solidify oligarchs’ and banks’ monopoly over economic power. For instance with smart contracts hypothetically if you’re late on rent your landlord can evict you regardless of if there are laws in place to protect your rights or not.

I think TA had an episode on Smart Cities and they mentioned the exact rent thing you noted, where it would just lock your door if you were nominally late. No interpersonal context, or even human contact, needed. As a long time renter by necessity, it’s chilling to imagine. (Housing prices are unreal in our area but our school district provides A+ support to our insanely bright ASD kiddo. I mean, how the heck to prices keep rising amidst a pandemic? There’s not a single listing in a 40 mile radius that’s under $1 mil. So depressing.)

Good commentary on media consumption becoming a brain worm driving us insane. What we restrict our consumption to limits and can distort our perception of the world. There is no innocent media. I recently read Don Quixote. First literary recognition that the media we consume to excess can literally drive us crazy.

yes! like obviously, if you have experienced something, you probably know more about it in some ways than someone who hasn't, but that 1) doesn't make you automatically right/moral and 2) doesn't make your points above criticism. there's nothing inherently wrong with taking people's lives experiences seriously, but this is weaponized a lot and folks should be aware of that.
