Watching this in 2024, and after reading about countless terrible police responses to shootings in the recent past, it honestly sounds like most of the weirdness from this story can be attributed to the Vegas PD and Casinos collaborating to cover up for the fact they were totally useless despite being armed and outnumbering paddock, along with the small possibility the Vegas PD couldn’t catch or let an additional shooter go.

in vegas there were a few pop up memorials the year after, and one in the clark county treasurer's office, but that's all gone now. people in vegas still have "vegas strong" on their cars, but no one talks about the shooting anymore.

One of my coworkers was a concert goer Paddock shot and killed. I didn’t know her that well but one day I went in and saw her talk about her plans that weekend and the next time I went in she was gone. I didn’t really grieve because it wasn’t my place, but it was just an incredibly surreal experience for me.

During discussion of Jesus Campos, nobody mentions this article qting his brother in law, who said that Campos said Paddock was on a first name basis with many of the staff, who knew that he had guns with him. He was a high roller, you don't think staff are going to be suspicious of someone bringing 21 suitcases up to the suite? Also explains that Ellen show was completely scripted and shot ahead of time, MGM put his family up at the Vdara and flew him to Mexico, a trip he had planned before the shooting. I accept that I’m a computer illiterate Gen Xer, but I found it incredibly hard to find anything about this event. which is just insane, given the nature of the internet. *trump voice* it’s the perfect podcast episode But for real tho i was hoping y’all would cover this at some point. Glad felix got in on it. Brace's soda metaphor is on point; so many threads to pull but nothing ever adds up. One thing i didnt hear you mention is it turns out paddock was VERY into gun rights and all that; would get “triggered” (yep, i said it) when the topic came up. I think one of the brothers' interviews touches on that. A lot of right-wing terrorism energy to it, also considering that he worked for the IRS just to learn how to hide income (which you did mention). Also that in months prior he apparently booked rooms in other hotels strategically overlooking other concerts, almost like he was doing dry runs, or maybe he was legit gonna do it then but got cold feet. While the topic is obsession-worthy in its own right, it’s especially pertinent for me because i happened to be there on vacation when it went down. ~2 miles north of there that night but was staying in Old Vegas. My own anecdote contributes little to the greater narrative but as another comment said, it was surreal. Of course it continues to be.

I live in Vegas and there are “Vegas Strong” things everywhere, memorials each year, etc. The memorial this year was not as extravagant because of COVID, but it still happened (I know survivors of the shooting, and they attended). It died out of the media quickly simply because it hurt tourism, which is the entire Vegas economy. Obviously they would hush the story ASAP, they bury any stories of violence on the strip. I never understand why anyone is weirded out by this aspect.

Regarding video poker being paddock’s game of choice: https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/las-vegas-shooter-made-video-poker-his-job/ If you 1) play optimal strategy, 2) at certain machines offering the best odds, 3) at casinos offering big comps/perks for big gamblers, it is possible to beat the house for a decent income but it’s an absolutely miserable existence. I used to live in Vegas and know many people who grind out like $100k in betting volume each year trying to break even to get top tier vip casino cards for things like free rooms, meals, valet parking etc. usually takes them like 12-18 hours to put in that kind of volume.

Great episode. Just thinking how it’s not like a forefront event in media or engrained in our psyche like sandy hook. Makes me think that if it was a “deep state”event, that they realized mass shootings don’t have as strong as an impact OR they realize more and more people are catching on and they have to be very careful with how tracks are covered and not be so blatant.

The ep was not as satisfying as I expected but brace’s soda metaphor kinda explains that. I with they had covered that video that came out of those four guards escorting some vip out, came out the night of the shooting I think. Also, I think more could be made of the pic of paddocks obliterated head leaking so fast. This is the first shooting where that happened and it is sus af. Almost like they knew they were losing control of the narrative early and were doing damage control.

I prefer when there is more of a parity between jokes/info ratio. Felix took us on many tangents, some not particularily funny? It felt hard to follow the paddock narrative with him and it seemed like there was a lot more content/ground you might have covered w/out him

Who hasn't gone to a Walmart and bought fake flowers and styrofoam balls before? The store places them centrally between the greeting cards and craft supplies, which is en route to office supplies and home decor. Because of the diverse category of things that fake flowers and styrofoam balls are included under, it's hard to resist the temptation to visit the aisle and buy a styrofoam ball, since when we were kids, it seemed like there was always some science project or lifehack from a Scholastic book fair spy kit book around the corner. Now in adulthood, they have an attainable, all-purpose mystique. You would only go down this aisle if you had no other driving purpose for going to the Walmart. You visit the styrofoam ball aisle when you have nothing to do but walk around Walmart and see what's there. I routinely buy fake flowers -- loved globally -- when I visit a Walmart, since they have rotating designs, and their organic shapes stick out among the aisles of big box and categorized products. Almost the opposite of a styrofoam ball, which I have purchased during the same Walmart trip before. I haven't used either in a meaningful way. Anyway great episode!

Fantastic episode. I wrote down a few notes while listening. - The FBI closed the case without determining a specific motive. I think Paddock intentionally denied them this knowledge, knowing it would simply hurt his victims more and build his infamy. - A Stanford scientist studied Paddock's brain. While he did not find brain damage that could explain some of his behavior, he did find a large number of deposits on his brain (far more then should have been present in a man his age). The deposits in question are not believed to serve as a basis for violent behavior, but they are an active area of research. NYT did a writeup of this. Maybe in a few years we'll know more. - I agree the behavior of the Eric brother was bizarre in those interviews, but my personal reaction was just that he was shocked by what happened. The 2nd day he came out for interviews, he stood there for a full minute or 2 just to sniffle and try to choke back tears. Most families hire a lawyer to speak for them in a situation like this; I wish he had done the same. Again, that's all just my subjective take. - Your discussion of Jesus Campos was fantastic, and I have really nothing to add other than I think people should watch the video for full effect. - I personally don't read too much into the missing hard drive. Other shooters have done the same thing to protect their privacy. The Virginia Tech shooter in 2007 tossed his phone and hard drive prior to the shooting.

This is super late but as someone who has used HotSOS—- it is not an automatic system. When employees receive calls/complaints from guests, employees manually enter the information into the system. There are preset options (like guest needs bedding, how many pieces, etc) but it’s possible to type notes. Guards typically only go to specific rooms or floors because of HotSOS messages, so I buy it.
