Author Devin O’Shea joins us to detail the incredible history of St. Louis’ Veiled Prophet Society, a fascinating tale that begins with the emergence of the KKK before touching the midwest’s rich history of bloody labor battles and deep segregation, its monied Aristocracy, and the culprits behind mass global chemical warfare.

My now departed friend, who was formerly a long time shop teacher, showed me how to fill a rubber glove with acetylene gas and ignite it. Such a sound! Dont try this at home.

Hey great episode. Unrelated but topical request, I’d love to hear you guys discuss the news about Wayfair that’s going around, and the connection to “philanthropic” (we all know what that’s for) organizations like Baptist Children and Family Services which are deeply implicated in child detention and, well, allegedly, other activities...

Listening from St. Louis and really enjoyed this episode. I love my city because it wears its ugliness on its sleeve and it’s full of beautiful working class people trying to make it better. The history of St. Louis is haunting but being reminded of our strong history of labor activism gives me hope for the future. And yeah...the arch does kind of look like a boob.

Why does the guest keep referring to the Queen of Love and Peace? It's the Queen of Love and Beauty.

Listening to this again, I would re-emphasize the Kempers, not just Ellie. If you're a Missourian, the Kempers likely have significant control over your life, because they run several of the biggest banks around here, and a lot of public institutions (the Kansas City Public Library, for instance) depend on their money. I've never been able to establish this 100% conclusively, but I *think* the Kemper banking fortune was based on a massive sale of slaves by the Kemper patriarch – Missouri had a bizarre status in the Civil War, in which it didn't secede but also kept its slaves, so if you were a slaveowning magnate, you had to make your money quick when Emancipation came calling. The Kempers also co-owned Harry Truman, along with the Kansas City Mafia, particularly the Pendergast Machine: after Truman's clothing store went bust, the Kempers gave him the banking and stock exchange jobs that helped set him up for politics, in which he served as frontman for their interests and for those of the Mob (and there's a lot to be unearthed here about Missouri Masons, as well).

Funnily enough, the lead actress from unbreakable Amy Schmitt is a Kemper and is in the news for winning the pageant in 1999. Instantly brought me back to this episode

Same here, I read years ago that she came from an uber rich family. but didn't know much else. It was silly to drag her for some silly pageant she won when she was a teenager. I think by that time that particular debutante ball tried to conceal their KKK, White supremacy affiliations.

If you're from Missouri (as I am), or from any other state near the St. Louis-into-Illinois line, it's next to damn impossible not to know what the Veiled Prophet Ball is, who runs it, and what it stands for. Now, it's probably true that Ellie Kemper was expected to participate, was expected to feel honored by winning, etc., etc., but there's *no way* you can see photos of the VP pageant (much less walk around inside it) without getting terrible KKK + Yellow King vibes. It's obvious, and I mean *obvious*, what's happening there. Someone should ask her what happens to all the 18-year-old debutante Queens of Love and Beauty after they're paired up with the 70-year-old corporate and political gorgons who become Veiled Prophets. The last VP to be unmasked in public was the executive vice president of Monsanto (at the time).
