Good episode, but calls for “common sense” are themselves politicized and used to orient a right wing philosophy. I think Nima Shirazi did a great dive into this about a month ago on Citations Needed. Contextually in your episode here it makes sense, but it’s a phrase I’ve had to reconsider my use of and hope that others do too.

kind of agree with most of what you said, but your comment on the mortality rate is bizarre. A few 100k people are going to die in the U.S. when it's all said and done, plus there has been nearly zero analysis on outcomes other than death, which could affect younger demographcis. The issue isn't having this falsely sold to us - the issue is that the U.S. response made no sense and continues to make no sense. Why aren't more resources being put towards protecting the elderly / those at risk? Why aren't there any coherent plans to get schools open? Why did it take so long to get a reasonable testing capacity? Why can't they even get people to wear the damn masks?

Have you not listened to any of the previous episodes where they discuss all those topics? And their point isn't that the media is incoherent, it's that the mass media culture functions to disorient and enervate the population with deliberately confusing narratives to provide cover for the crimes of the oligarchs, including all the issues you mention. They don't have to bother censoring any of the people exposing those crimes if they just bombard the people trying to stay informed with a constant stream of nonsense. Also the official figures about COVID's mortality rate are total BS. The actual number of deaths attributable to the virus is several times higher than what any government in the world is willing to admit. If you're young and healthy, yeah, you're more likely to be okay if you catch it, but even going by official stats, for at-risk populations the mortality rate is much higher. Also, the real disaster with COVID is that almost no one should be dying at all. Even if there's no cure, scientists knew all along how to keep it from spreading. The pandemic was entirely preventable.
