From the future: I get the points on Russiagate but the Senate “bipartisan investigation” report detailed extensive contacts and collaboration between the trump campaign and Russian intelligence. They couldn’t find an overt agreement, but the campaign was clearly relying on Russian support. I mean Trump’s friggin campaign manager Paul Manafort, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, was identified and proven to be as a “Russian intelligence officer.” You can argue about the pee-tape being nonsense sure, but there was pretty obvious and proven trump collaboration with Russian contacts.

That Rove quote about "making reality" I always took as part of the reason that Bush ended up with a 20% approval rating. Eventually capital "R" reality catches up with all of us. It may not be in 4 years, but in 8 years, it's not as easy to mask the failures. The Bush administration may have been consequential, but I don't think any serious historians are going to see it as good for the country. The administration's failure to account for ground reality was part of its undoing.
