I’ve spent 15 of my 30 year construction career as a commercial carpenter. During that time I participated in the construction of four prisons. From that experience I can tell you that everything, EVERYTHING in the areas populated by prisoners is designed to prevent suicide. Clothes hooks are designed to support only so much weight before breaking away and swiveling downward so nothing heavier than a shirt can be hung from them. Ceiling fixtures are welded shut and lightbulbs are exchanged from a separate service catwalk so that nothing can be hung from them either. Mirrors in the cells are made of highly polished steel, not glass, so they cannot be broken and used to cut or gash. I could continue with further examples, but all I mean to convey is that it is basically impossible to commit suicide in prison. But this isn’t my ultimate point either. The point I’m trying to get across is this: is SUPER DUPER 1MILLION PERCENT MEGA-FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE to commit suicide in prison if you have (supposedly) tried and failed to do so once already. Paraphrasing my favorite tweet from this morning... if you were surprised this morning to learn Jeffery Epstein committed suicide, think how surprised he must have been! Suicide watch? Probably more like: Suicide! Watch!
