January Dormitory Diary Entry - Watanabe (Patreon)

Here’s my dormitory diary entry for January.

I went back to my parents' house for the New Year holidays, so I got to watch anime on their big TV, which I hadn’t done in a while. I usually watch anime on my phone (except for movies), so I was able to see way more detail and get a fresh perspective on the medium.

I realized how many details had probably been missing in my frames and that I needed to draw more carefully.

In December, I participated in a keyframe drawing challenge. It was a lot of cleaning up rough frames and adding shadows, and just that was hard enough. On top of that, the director threw in some extra procedures for the cuts I was working on. It was particularly challenging to take the rough concept designs and turn them into full characters. I was allowed to take my time with the assignment since it was just practice but had it been real work with a deadline, I wouldn’t be able to produce enough cuts workable to make any sort of living. Had I left my assignment in the shape it was, it would’ve been hard to create in-betweens from it. It might’ve just resulted in me having to do retakes…And that’s what went through my mind as I was working.

The assignment was even harder than I imagined it’d be; I hope to go a bit further with the next opportunity.

1月の限定日記を投稿します。

年末年始は実家に帰ったので、久しぶりに大きい画面でアニメを観ました。映画などは除いて普段はスマホの小さい画面で観る事が多いため、細かい部分をちゃんと確認することができ、スマホでいつも観ているはずの映像でも新鮮に感じられて良かったです。細かい部分も気を抜かず丁寧に描かないといけないなと改めて感じました。

12月は課題で2原作業にチャレンジしました。ラフの原画を清書して影付けをするだけでも大変なのですが、作業したカットに演出さんの追加の指示があり、ラフな素体からキャラの絵に寄せるのに苦戦しました。今回は練習だったので沢山時間を使って描けたのですが、実際の仕事では締め切りがあります。それに加えて何回も描き直して時間を使ってしまうと、捌けるカットが少なくなるので稼げません。だからと言って、変な絵のままだと動画が大変になってしまうだろうし、もしかしたらリテイクになってしまうかもしれません…。そんなことを考えながら作業しました。

想像していたよりも大変な作業だったので、次にやるときはもう少し速く出来るようにしたいです。
