The infected only come when in or on the ground are the fungal threads. In the 2nd episode, the infected were lying outside on the ground and were then alerted via the mushroom threads. At least this is how I understood it :)

Just like Ozymandias in Breaking Bad this Episode is a 10/10 for me. Just pure perfection.

They just died and didn't turn. They were not infected. What a wonderful episode. Have you ever watched Contagion by Soderbergh? Very good movie about a virus outbreak, with excellent scientific research going into it. It came out 9 years before Covid.

This was one of the biggest moments that took a totally different direction from the game but it was a beautiful episode.
