He did it because the cops were there. You can even noticed Skyler's face when she figure it out that she never said that, and everything he's saying is to saving her. That's why she was looking at the cops and then said "Im sorry", why in hell Skyler will say that. Other things about this episode The knife is the same knife Walter took to protect the family from Tuco in S1. When Walter is rolling the barrel, you can see the pants from Ep1 what flew away. Man this one hits harder every time I see it. My 2 favorite episodes of anything ever are this and a few GOT episodes (I won't even bother saying which ones bc apparently there are still people that haven't seen it this many years later) but yea, this, Star Wars and GOT are for me far and away better than anything ever. I beleive the reason Walt said all that on the phone is bc he obviously knew the cops were listening and he was trying to make himself look as bad as possible and like he forced Skylar into everything so she doesn't go down with him. This was insane but make no mistake, the next 2 are very very good as well. Season 4 as a whole is still my favorite though bc Gus is my favorite character in this show. Hank not far behind him though.

Rian Johnson directed this episode, he also directed the Fly episode. He’s a really hit or miss director but when it comes to breaking bad the episodes he’s directed have been pure masterpieces
