Yes, a part of Walter did it to provide for his family but he more so wanted to change the way his family views him. I think he wanted to die like a martyr from cancer, leaving his family with all this money, and his family being amazed at him, and wondering how he came into all this money. However, now in remission, this plan can't go through. He now has to live with his decisions he has made, and sadly, many of his decisions involved constantly lying to his wife. Walter wants to continue to live in this fantasy where he is the hero of the story, but Skylar won't allow that. Skylar is by no means perfect, but Walt saying he does this for the family is way to justify his actions, trying to make his motives more pure than they really are.

I mean, of course there's personal reasons to it too but the main reason was to provide for his family. Had he been a single guy with no one to take care of, wife or kids, he wouldnt have done it either.
