The thing about the intent is that having a selfish intention null-and-voids good deeds but having a good intention doesn't undo negative actions. This is indeed unfair and it's a big part of the show going forward.

it is a lot of work doing all those little tortures but i remember mike schur saying that for the demons "there is not torture too small." he said that michael would look at every little thing to the point of how many blades of grass would exist in this fake good place to make it be just a little annoying for the four humans. it's seen by the demons as like the ultimate passion project. also on the side but as to automation you should read the book bullshit jobs by david graeber.
