In many ways the village of Altasa is like the multitude of coastal settlements that dot the coasts of Marania, a small community of a dozen or so families subsiding on the bounty they can pull from the seas.
Many generations of fishermen have called this remote little hamlet home, with most venturing scarcely more than a handful of miles from its limits, with the exception of fishing expeditions naturally.
Such isolation has led to some unique folklore and superstitions, none more so than the Shrine of the Drowned. Little more than an old fishing boat replete with a oil lamp, it bears the carved names of all those lost at sea, a memorial to the Drowned Dead.
What no doubt started as a simple means to honour the lost and provide a stout lamp during stormy nights, the shrine has warped into its own legend. According to the locals, the lamp must always be lit to keep the dead in their graves. Should the light ever be snuffed the Drowned Dead will seek the living to drag them beneath the waves.
A quaint little tale to be sure….
