AWKWAFINA WHERE IS YOUR ACCENT GIRL?.....what annoyed Kenya

I don’t agree about awkwafina. I don’t think it’s right to appropriate cultures for profit, but honestly I don’t hear a blaccent when she talks. Most slang and pop culture is stolen/derived from black culture and idk where the line gets drawn (like how far removed it has to be to no longer be appropriative), but I feel like awkwafina’s accent is pretty removed from what actual AAVE is. It’s more like a street/Brooklyn accent - which derives from AAVE at least partially, but I also know people from NYC who sound like that (not usually from Manhattan or LI tho, usually Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx). I also just find it sad that there’s so much energy against Awkwafina, who’s one of the few new Asian actresses and usually portrays Asian-Americans vs the usual fresh-off-the-boat immigrant others Asians are delegated to. I don’t think she should be immune to criticism, but it’s just sad to see so much energy against her while your problematic faves are criticism free. I feel like criticism always comes first for women, and women of color, especially when they’re the only ones in a space. Like Lizzo or Jackie Aina. Like obviously people make mistakes, but the magnifying glass is never there for the very established. For awkwafina, I just feel like it’s a sad case of triangulation.

You may not hear it but it's there. I don't know if you're from NY but I am and can tell you there's a difference between how black people talk vs how other groups (such as italians) talk especially in the boroughs. Like how theres a difference between white and black southern accents. You don't know where the line is drawn is because AAVE has become so normalized and intertwined with regular everyday speech. There's no one strict AAVE it varies. The issue is the asian americans who perpetuate the stereotypes are perpetuating their own stereotypes, awkwafina said she doesn't want to mock her own people but mocks AAVE and it's community by using it's aesthetic and speech to benefit herself. There's going to be a magnifying glass on you when you're one of the only ones in your space because people don't have anyone else to look to (that's a whole other convo) but criticizing awkwafina is not saying our other faves are immune to it. It's just another example of when people take from our culture so not insult their own. But the taking is an insult by itself.

With the way things have been going to hope for black womanhood fluctuates from "we're improving" to "zero."
