Chapter 3 – Helping out the Orphanage

“I see…”

There are probably a lot of kids in the same situation as Emmy.

But all the kids here seemed fine. Of course, they had probably experienced some hardships that I don’t understand yet.

When the conversation was over, I took the items Emmy and I had bought out of the [Storage Unit] and started arranging and putting them away.

The kids helped me, and I was surprised at how quickly they were able to move them around.

I guess that since they are living in a place like this, they should be able to take care of themselves and do a little housework.

However, since they are children, playing around while working is a given for them.

“Mistwer, mistwer, let’s pway house now.”

“No! He’s gonna pway tag with us!”

“No, he ishn’t! He’s gonna wead me a book!”

“He shtill has a match with me!!”

And that is how I got involved with them.

In my previous life, I had no relations with women, and this inevitably meant that my experience with children is lacking.

In other words, I am not good with kids.

“Well, ahaha… Um, I’ve still got some work to do, so…”

I am a little ashamed of myself that I can only smile at their requests.

“Sigh. Look what you did. Alf is now troubled by you all.”

Thankfully, Emmy is always there to help me out in such situations.

“Marin, help me fold the sheets. Alf has cleaned up that room already. If you want to play house, I’ll join you later.”

“-kayyy.”

“Kiril, stop goofing around and read the book to Meena. Barum, stop challenging Alf into your matches.”

Emmy gave them instructions in a calm tone of voice, and they listened to her as if by magic.

“Alf, I really appreciate your help today. You don’t have to bother with the kids. You’ve already done much for us.”

“No, no, no. I’m just glad I could help.”

“Um, I think it’s time to start preparing dinner. What would you like to eat, Alf?”

“Um… I can help you with that, too, if you want?”

“Then, is it alright for you to stay here for dinner?”

“If it’s not too much trouble.”

“Oh no, you’re not troubling us at all! In fact, to repay your gratitude, I’ll be doing my best in cooking today!”

Emmy said with a smile.

It was a very cute, radiant smile.

“…huh?”

But as if something was odd, the kids who had scattered were all looking at us like they were frozen.

As I thought about the reason, everyone came back to us with weird looks on their faces.

“U-uhm…” one of the children spoke. “Did I just hear that big sis ish cooking dinner fow us tonight?”

“Yes. Since Mr. Alf is here, she said she’ll do her best today.”

Is it me, or are the kids looking a little pale?

“U-uhm…instead of rweading to Meena, I just wemembered something I had to do today…”

“I-in that case, how about big sis wead the book fow us instead?”

“No can’t do. I can’t just grant your requests all of a sudden, you know?”

In the midst of all this, I saw someone tugging at the hem of my dress. I looked over there and saw Barum looking at me with a tearful face.

“Fraud… no, Mr. Alf.”

“Hm? What is it, Barum?”

“Can you cook, Mr. Alf?”

“You can remove the “Mr.”. And no need to be so formal to me.”

“Uu… well, Alf, can you cook…?”

“Well, if it’s simple dishes, I can.”

At these words, all the children’s eyes were on me.

“Big brother! Hewp her out!”

“Pwease! It’s too hard for Emmy to do it by herself!”

“Hey, hey, hey! You can’t just ask him too much, no matter how kind Alf is!”

Emmy smilingly chides the children.

However, the children looked at me as if they were hanging on to me for their dear lives.

“Uhm, Emmy. Doing nothing while you do everything is unbearable for me, so let me help you.”

“Really? In that case, thanks. I’ll be counting on you.”

The children breathed out a big sigh of relief when they heard this.

Their kitchen is magnificent, as one would expect from a former nobleman’s mansion.

There were four or five large stoves in a row, each powered by a magic stone, and many large pots and pans were neatly arranged.

The preparation table and sink were also spacious, a bit like the kitchen of the family restaurant where I used to work part-time.

“Then I’ll start carving up the rabbit meat.”

The Great Rabbit meat I dismantled was perfectly bled, and the bones and organs were removed, but the meat was still whole and in shape, so we had to cut it into sections.

Here, Emmy volunteered and began butchering the game with the hunting knife.

…huh? Isn’t that a crazy good handiwork already?

How should I put it? Looking at the reactions of the children, I thought that Emmy might be a mess machine, but isn’t she, like, able to cook normally?

――But that was my first thought.
