Chapter 23 – Meeting the Head of the Leschbeins

After settling down in this way, the meeting finally began.

“My name is Mysterios, head of the Leschbein House. First, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sending my daughter back to us.”

His manner was polite for a head of a large noble family. Depending on how you looked at it, you could also say he has an attitude that could be considered weak.

Schild is now in the reception room inside the dilapidated mansion. And from there, not only the head of the family and Schild was there, but also Carney, Rezahata, and the head of the family’s wife, Mrs. Leschbein, all were in attendance.

It was densely populated.

“I apologize for barging in on you so suddenly. I know you’re busy, but……”

“No, not really. It’s just that at the present time, we don’t have much of a role to play. Because of that, I got lots of time in these hands.”

The head of the family laughed derisively at himself.

A powerful nobleman would be in charge of a certain territory and, at the same time, be entrusted with an important position in the royal court.

But the head of the Leschbeins now has even less of that.

Does that mean that he’s content in staying in the shadows?

“I’ll get straight to the point. Currently, Princess Cymbium is working with Oscar’s former patriarch to invoke Article 64 of the Magna Carta. And for that, we would like to ask for your cooperation.”

Apparently, according to Cymbium, the Leschbeins were totally not positive about Cymbium’s advice to cooperate with them.

This leads to Schild coming out to replace Cymbium and the others, who now had to devote their energies to unite their own forces instead.

“It greatly pains me to say this, but……”

The Leschbein head sighed without even a tinge of authority in his tone.

“For us, the struggle for power in the royal court is already a different world. We have indeed lost our past glory, but we are still able to maintain a small but comfortable life. And we are already content with that.”

“My ancestors will be angry in the spirit world, but……” he also added in his introduction.

“We don’t want to disrupt this quiet life just to bring back the house to its former glory that is also full of chaos and struggles. All we wanted is for the people of Ryngberg and the Oscar to leave us alone.”

A meek but firm refusal.

After all, what Cymbium is planning will destroy their plans to have a peaceful life.

However, Schild has a trump card that Cymbium did not have.

“Father! Please don’t say such unworthy things!”

The first to interrupt was Rezahata, the eldest daughter, who had just returned from being welcomed home.

She was very loyal to the policy of Schild and the others.

“If the Magna Carta is invoked, there will definitely be a big political upheaval! And if we ride this wave of change in advance, it will no longer be a dream that our Leschbein House will be on the center stage again!”

“Reza, change doesn’t necessarily mean good things will happen. In fact, it might make things even worse. Just because you have the chance, that doesn’t mean that everything is going to go conveniently.”

The argument of the head of the family was that of a person who has been beaten down by reality to the point of disgust.

“It’s not just us. Most of the people in this country are also satisfied with the current reign. So why are you forcing us to change it? We kept asking her the same question, but Her Royal Highness the First Princess still refused to provide us with a clear answer.”

That’s because……

“I may have fallen, but I am still the representative of a faction of a reasonable size. Therefore, I cannot lightly involve the people who still believe in our family and follow us in a political battle with no vision nor goal whatsoever.”

“But you see, Princess Cymbium is……”

The next person to speak up was Carney.

These were her first words after entering the house, which was supposed to be her family home.

“We are concerned about the fact that His Majesty the King is under house arrest. The most important man in the nation is being deprived of his freedom, and no one can do anything about it. The Magna Carta is the only way to break through that, other than the bloody way which is rebellion.”

Carney lives in the same royal city but has a separate residence from her parents, but like his sister Rezahata, this is the first time the parent and child had seen each other in a very long time.

So Schild couldn’t help but feel disturbed about this conversation that not even a glance nor a “welcome back” greeting was thrown back to back. By her own family member, no less.

“Her Highness fears that this situation, if left unchecked, could lead to a further danger of the royal power. Lord Schild here and I are of the same opinion. That’s why I’m asking for your help, father…….!”

“I can’t help you if you don’t even explain to me what exactly the danger is.”

――I can’t help you if you don’t even explain to me what the problem is.

The curt response from the head of Leschbein has probably been repeated in the many mouths of the other lords in the country.

“And the state of the country if that Magna Carta is passed. The royal family that proposed the Magna Carta will lose their right to the throne. And yet, both Cymbium and Serenea signed the motion, so what happens after that? Who will be the next king?”

“……!?”

“Neither Her Highness Cymbium nor the Apparition of the Oscars has an answer to that question. That’s the reason why no one follows them. That’s just how politics works.”

It was a perfectly valid argument, and Carney couldn’t argue with it.

“…… I’ve had enough.”

It was the oldest woman in the room who suddenly said those words. The wife of the head of the family of the Leschbein. And the mother of Rezahata, and also Carney.

“Now that Reza is back, nothing is missing in our home. So why won’t you stop? What more do you want from us?”

“That’s……you see……m-mother…”

“Stop.”

The woman spoke in indignance.

“You have no right to call me mother. I have only one daughter, and that is Reza. You were just a creation to revive the Leschbeins but eventually failed to fulfill that role!”

“!?”

Another word that didn’t make sense to Schild popped up.

“I know that it’s you who had turned Rezahata into this. You still haven’t given up your ambition, don’t you? And now you’re trying to gain fame by sucking up and licking the feet of Princess Cymbium. You can be as ambitious as you want, but don’t drag us into this! We just want to live in peace and quiet with our family alone!”

A hint of sadness flashed across Carney’s face.

An outsider who didn’t know their situation wouldn’t know what they were talking about.

Even so, for Schild, Carney is one of his most beloved women in his life. So he can’t just sit back and let her be abused like that.

“Hold on a second.”

But when he was just about to argue back about something, the door to the reception room opened, and a new person entered the room.

And that new person was……

“……Carney?”
