Chapter 14 – The Goddess’ Quest

“What I’m about to tell you may deeply affect your lives in the future. I want you to listen to with all your heart.”

As if her lascivious appearance earlier had been a lie, the goddess spoke to me in a sincere tone.

“This is, well……just treat it as an adventurer’s quest from me to you.”

“Quest?”

“It’s a bit of a long story. Let’s move to another location.”

Elciata then urged us to change to our clothes before moving on.

When we left the hall where we had just been, we found ourselves in a gently curving corridor.

“I have something to show you. Follow me, if you please.”

Elciata led the way, and we started walking.

As for Milfa, she was still in her human form, clinging to my side.

The feel of her skin, her breaths, it was unmistakably that of a human girl.

In addition, because of the fact that we were having sex just now, I felt incredibly embarrassed.

If she returns to her original form, will I be able to treat her as a mere ‘sword partner’ like before?

“Hmmm”

“? What is it, master?”

Hearing me mumble, Milfa looks at me.

Even such gestures are strangely cute in my eyes.

“No, no, it’s nothing. ……”

“??”

Milfa tilted her head in puzzlement, unbeknownst of my thoughts.

“Ehem. I think we need to talk about the reincarnation system first.”

And then, as if to break the air, Elciata began to speak.

I shook off my discomfort and came back to my senses.

The reincarnation system, huh. I’ve been reincarnated as an elf through this system.

“Anyway, do you know what reincarnation is?”

“Isn’t that, just starting a new life?”

“Then, why would it be needed to be performed by the gods?”

“Needed? So, there’s a demand for it?”

I was at a loss for words when she came up with the next question.

Elciata just smiled warmly.

“Reincarnation is the transmigration of the soul. By repeating life over and over again, our souls grow little by little. The souls that grow up in this way change the human world for the better. That is the purpose and raison d’etre of reincarnation.

In order to accelerate the growth of the world – which is to bring about more remarkable changes in the world of humanoid beings – the super-ancient civilizations created such a system.”

“The Super Ancients!? Not the gods!?”

Elciata nodded, still not breaking her smile.

“Not only that. The Super Ancients had also figured out the magic system. What do you think magic is, anyway?”

“Well……”

I was once again at a loss for words.

I’ve been using magic sword techniques with the support of Milfa in my everyday battles, and up until now, maybe because of my selected trait, I already have a sense of how to use magic once I make an image in my mind.

But when it comes to the specifics of how magic works, the truth is, I still have no idea what is the logic behind it.

“Ah, that was pretty ill of me. This is the first time I explained this to a human from a magic-less world, so I pre-assumed you already had the primary knowledge. About magic…… Magic is the realm of the supernatural. It’s about tapping into the power of gods and demons and using that power for your own will.”

“Gods and demons……”

“In other words, Super Ancients had figured out how to access the heavens and the demon world. And they borrowed that immense power to create all kinds of things on this world. However……”

“However?”

“The power was too great for them to control. In the end, they got destroyed because they got lost in that power,” said Elciata.

The Fenrir we just fought is one of the remnants of that, and it was already an order of magnitude more powerful than the monsters and demon race I had fought in my previous quests.

Just how much worse would it be in the Super-Ancient Era, where all of these things are being strewn about?

If that’s the case, it’s certainly a power that is already enough to bring ‘remarkable change’ to the world.

“I got a little off-topic here. Let’s get back to the reincarnation system.”

Elciata reminded.

“There was a Mage in the Super Ancients who had lived for a long time and acquired a wisdom that rivaled that of the gods. What he created was the reincarnation system. He would randomly select souls from the countless worlds that existed and then summon gods to reincarnate them. And when they do, he gives them ‘perks.’”

“Perks?”

“Also known as “traits,” and yes, you too are benefitting from that even now.”

Elciata stared back at me.

I remembered the reincarnation ritual.

I chose five traits and was reborn into the person I am today.

“We agreed to use this system to create reincarnations because it fits the purpose of the gods – to bring about greater change in the world through those who reincarnate with greater power than others……and we’re here.”

She opened the door at the end of the corridor, and we entered the room.

It’s a hall as vast as the one we saw earlier.

“What is this……?”

In front of me towered a colossal stone monument.

── Alice, Dorothea, Wyatt, Melchior, Razza, Natasha, Bake, Alexandra, Goldova, Kastor, Hannibal, Redone, Lian, Alberich, Siegfeld, Siedler, Balmung, Grimwald, and many others. ──

There are dozens to hundreds of other names inscribed on the monument.

“These are the names of those who have reincarnated, or will soon be reincarnating, in all time periods – past, present, and future – and they are all inscribed on this monument.”

Elciata explained.

“Their paths have all been different. Some of them became heroes, others kings. Some have lived peacefully; others ended up in war. Whatever they did in the world they were born into, we did not interfere. That is the rule of the world of the gods.

But he ── he was so full of malice, lust, dominance, and instinct for destruction. He was just too much to be overlooked.”

“He?”

“Redone the Dark Elf.”

For the first time, Elciata, who had always been smiling, expressed a grim expression on her face.

Redone. The name that was carved right in front of mine.

It’s a name that sounds like a woman’s, but if it’s a “he” then they must be a man.

“In his previous life, he was the worst kind of murderer. But even after his reincarnation, he continued to destroy and kill as he did in his previous life.”

“Why did you reincarnate such a dangerous person?”

I involuntarily rebuked.

“The system selects souls at random. We can’t pick and choose. The good ones are free to do better in their new life, but it was also the same for bad ones, as they also free to repeat their evil deeds in their next life. However, these guys won’t live for too long as it is also a hostile world filled with monsters. But he……”

Elciata shook her head from side to side with a pained expression.

“His magic is just too powerful. And with the worst of the magic swords, he has grown to the point where he can personally destroy even a single country by himself – that’s why, for this quest, I want you to defeat him.”

“You want me to what?” I looked at the goddess with a frown.

“If there is such a bad guy, wouldn’t it be a lot quicker if the gods were to take him out directly?”

“As I said before, gods basically can’t interfere with the human world. Or else greater consequences may happen.”

Elciata shook her head in a serious manner at my rebuke.

“Not all gods were good. And defeating the evildoer may or may not benefit another god. There are many of us who want this world for themselves, and are ready to resort to any method as long as they have the chance. We must keep each other in check in order to not make any rash moves, or else everything will be destroyed because of us. That’s just putting the cart before the horse.”

I guess the god realm is quite a messy power struggle as well.

It’s just like humans.

“I know what you’re thinking, but it’s the other way around. Man is the embodiment of God. There’s not much difference between what you do and what us gods do. Fundamentally, there is no difference. We fight with each other, love each other, hate each other…”

Elciata suddenly started to sound profound.

It’s hard to believe that this is the same goddess who was panting on my hips just a moment ago.

“That’s one thing; this is another.”

Ah, you are reading my mind right now. That’s cheating.

“I’m not reading your mind, not yet at least. Actually, just one look at your face, and I could immediately guess what’s going on in your head. Fufufu.”

Elciata laughed mischievously as if she succeeded in a prank.

“Anyway, that’s my quest for you. Even the gods were divided on this. They said that no matter how much carnage and destruction he wrought, it is still part of the transformation. They also warned the other gods not to interfere. So, in doing this, I may be punished if this gets found out. But I still want to ask you. All to protect the love and peace on that world.”

Love and peace, huh……those were really big words, but coming from a god……

“So the reason why you went to the trouble of calling me was to ask me to do that ──”

I mumbled and then realized.

No way, I thought.

But even if she was the one who activated Fenrir ──

Just how much of this is this Goddess’s plan?

I stared at Elciata.

“Who knows? I wonder about that as well.”

The goddess just smiles at me.

The light in her purple eyes was so deep that I could not catch even a glimpse of her true intentions.
