Chapter 10 – Combat Training, or rather, Actual Combat

“Aaah~, so hungry……”

After finishing his marksmanship training, Yoichi activated [Return+] and returned to Espoir 305. he then left the room and walked to the nearby convenience store to treat his empty stomach.

Normally, a single bento box would be enough to eat his fill. For some reason, on this occasion, in addition to the single bento he usually buys, he suddenly craved for more, ending up putting an additional cake roll, an éclair, fried chicken, French fries and steamed meat buns in his basket.

(I bought them on the spur of the moment, but can I eat them all?) Yoichi thought in his mind as the cashier scanned the food one by one.

However, these thoughts changed to wonder as he started to gobble them all up.

(Wow. I wonder if my stomach also became stronger from the [Healthy Body+].)

Though Yoichi’s idea is partially correct, it’s not the whole story.

While it is no exaggeration to say that Yoichi is always in a state of “super recovery” due to [Healthy Body+], this only scopes to enhancing metabolism for recovery, so the energy needed for actual metabolism is still required to be consumed by Yoichi himself through food and drinks, as he still has a body of a human being.

(Well, it also has the effect of maintaining your best conditions, so you won’t get fat from overeating, I guess.)

But even though his thought process is slightly off, his conclusion is indeed correct.

“Also, in the first place, my basal metabolism already high, so I won’t gain weight so easily. Plus, I’m feeling like my skin is becoming more and more radiant.”

Yoichi spoke to himself as he looked in the mirror while brushing his teeth, thinking to himself as he stroked his cheek.

(If your metabolism is accelerated, it will also accelerate your ageing process, but to think I’m even looking younger than before……Well, actually, I’m not, but still, as expected of a god-like being, this is already an impressive blessing.)

It is said that those who have the normal skill [Healthy Body] in other parallel worlds can maintain in their prime for a long time and their lifespan can be twice as long as the average of their race.

However, what kind of effect the “+” on the [Healthy Body] adds is still unknown to Yoichi, as it wasn’t even briefed by the administrator about its differences with the other skills that have no “+” in them.

(And that clumsy administrator must have forgotten about it already. Just how powerful are these maximum blessings that she added to my skills?)

Yoichi could only sigh in regret for not asking this fact early on.

〇●〇●

“Aaaah~, so tiring……”

After finishing his meal and taking a break, Yoichi started replenishing his ammunition.

At one round at a time, he loaded the spare bullets into the magazine, then after reloading it back to the gun, he pulled the slider to send the topmost bullet into the chamber.

Then he refills the magazine with the lost round.

(Isn’t there a more efficient way to do this? Couldn’t you just put one bullet in the chamber of each gun first, and then fill the mags?)

Then it suddenly occurred to Yoichi.

Seeing both the bullets and the gun being stored in his [Infinite Storage+], Yoichi wondered if he could use the infinite storage’s maintenance function to load the weapon instead.

There are four more guns with empty magazines and empty chambers.

There, he then imagined putting ammunition into the gun on his head. After a while,

“Ooh, I made it!”

Taking the gun out of the [Infinite Storage+], Yoichi immediately checked out its magazine. Upon discovering that it was fully loaded, he then pulled the slider, causing a bullet in the chamber to be ejected.

(So easy!)

Yoichi stored the said gun and the ejected bullets to the [Infinite Storage+] back again, and after imagining the gun being refilled, he took it out the second time and found that the bullet was loaded again in the chamber.

Using this, he loaded the rest of the guns and the spare mags in the same way.

At first, he wondered if he still will need the spare mags since he could now change the mags in the [Infinite Storage+], but thinking they would still be useful for something, he reloaded all the spare mags as well.

The next day, some of his equipment arrived.

What he received was a military-grade machete, a military vest, various types of protectors, tactical gloves, safety shoes, large shields, circular shields, and the ‘robe’.

Though it would still take a few more days to receive the stainless-steel mesh shirt and pants as a substitute for chainmail, Military helmet and bulletproof visors, and face masks, even what arrived were only a part of the kit, Yoichi already felt safe with all this.

Yoichi thought that he could at least train for combat in that place. However, he was still worried about not having something to protect his head, so he bought a motorcycle helmet at a local discount store in the meantime.

After arranging the purchased items and putting some in the [Infinite Storage+] after opening their packages, he then wore the equipment he received, all except for the shield and the robe, and reflected himself in the mirror of his washbasin from a short distance away.

(Hmmm, if I walked around town in this, I’d be in line for a police check.)

“If you look at it as a survivalist outfit, it’s pretty cool, but if you ask me if it fits into a fantasy world, I’d have to say no.”

(I guess it’s a good thing I bought the robe.)

The robe Yoichi bought was for cosplay, like the ones worn by knights in space war movies that came off with a hood, and it was made of dark cloth that looking closer, also gave off a brownish hue.

He draped it over his gear.

Still, or as he should have expected, he couldn’t put the hood part properly with his motorcycle helmet still on, so he took off the helmet first. Then by covering his entire body with the robe and wearing the hood, he now felt like he could fit into the fantasy world.

Since he finds it troublesome to take off and put on the helmet on his own, Yoichi practiced trial and error to see if he could take it out of the [Infinite Storage+] and equip it at once, as well as store it while equipped in his head, and after practicing it several times, he was able to do it without any problems.

Yoichi next practiced equipping and storing the shields he brought. As he found even the small circular shield a hindrance when firing a gun, he thought of learning this, also as insurance if he fails to switch to his secondary in case of emergency.

After spending half a day practicing changing his equipment using the [Infinite Storage+], Yoichi ate a huge lunch at a nearby Chinese restaurant. After returning home, he flew to another world right away with his new gear.

Yoichi had already checked beforehand to make sure there was no one nearby, so after arriving, he immediately took off his hood and put on his helmet.

Today, however, Yoichi wasn’t planning to shoot on trees.

This time, he’s going to practice shooting at moving targets –  Monsters – aberrants, apparitions, demons, whatever these creatures were called. So rather than calling it training, it was already an actual battle or a hunt, only for the difference that he’ll be dealing with these otherworld abominations instead of regular animals.

With the use of [Appraisal+], he did a search to look for monsters in the vicinity.

He then went in the direction indicated by the nearest arrow and found the monster he was the most familiar with – the horned rabbit, which he first encountered in this world.

**********

Spear Rabbit

Status: Alert

Subjugation Rank: F

Magic stone: 100 grams

Subjugation Proof Location: Horn

Remarks: A ferocious rabbit-type monster that boasts high jumping power. It can leap up to 5 meters without assistance. The horns and fur are favoured as materials, and the flesh is often sold as meat.

**********

Since Yoichi’s presence had already been noticed, the rabbit was already on its guard. As for the Subjugation Rank, it seems to be a guideline in this world, and even showed it needed three to four adventurers of the same rank to defeat it safely.

(Adventurers are a bunch of those guys, aren’t they?)

“I don’t know how strong an F-rank is, but even if I were to count it from A, it is sure to be a fairly low rank.”

It was likely that a more detailed appraisal would reveal more about this, but Yoichi decided to leave it for later.

Yoichi held his gun at a distance of about seven meters. Given the effective range of the pistol, it was not desirable to be any further away.

However, if he got any closer, he would be in his opponent’s face. By the way, the distance between him and his target is measured live by his [Appraisal+], so there should be no such thing as misjudgment.

The spear rabbit was wary, and was watching Yoichi closely with its nose twitching.

It must be expecting Yoichi to pounce at it once he reaches a few steps closer. However, Yoichi didn’t step forward from his spot and held up his pistol.

He aimed the gun right between Spear Rabbit’s eyes and pulled the trigger twice.

The gun went off with two bangs, and Spear Rabbit fell to the ground.

The first shot went right between its eyes, while the other went slightly off and grazed its cheek, hitting it right in the shoulder.

The reason why Yoichi pulled the trigger twice was because he had read a line in a manga that said, “If you want to be sure of your shot, always double-tap. Bang, Bang!” those lines flashed over his head.

He then put the Spear Rabbit he killed into the [Infinite Storage+] and tried to use the disassembly function.

The Spear Rabbit was then divided into horns, fangs, bones, skin, flesh, internal organs, blood, magic stones, and bullet remains.

He took out the fur first to try it out, and found that it was quite comfortable to the touch. After re-storing the fur, he then took out what was classified as a “magic stone”. Something like a dull black pebble appeared in his hand.

“Magic Stone, heh.”

[A solid object that contains magical power, and is said to have been called a magic stone because of its stone-like shape and texture.

Monsters, without exception, have magic stones in their bodies. In most cases, it is in the heart, and because the magic stone is a literal lump of magic power, it is said that it is the one that induces mana to flow into the body of the monster, giving the monster an enhanced physical ability in their bare state than beasts or humans who do not have magic stones in their bodies.]

These magic stones, which can be said to be a magic battery, are considered a valuable energy source in this world.

In this world, there is magic, and there are magical tools that can reproduce magical effects. The magic stone Yoichi obtained is used as the power source for those magic tools.

(I guess it’s like oil or electricity in our world.)

That was the impression Yoichi had after using [Appraisal+] to research demon stones.

Magic stones are a valuable source of energy that supports the civilization of this world, and the materials obtained from the corpses of monsters are also resources that are needed in various fields. By purchasing and selling these items from the appropriate organizations, it seems that they can be used as a source of income in this world.

The next thing that Yoichi took out was the bullet.

It was the bullet that had been buried in the spear rabbit’s body and served as the killing blow of the said monster, and had been removed by dismantling.

Due to the maintenance function, the bullet that should have been crushed has been beautifully restored, and even the striations caused by rifling marks had already disappeared.

However, it seemed that the gunpowder consumed during firing could not be restored, so sadly, it could not be reused as a bullet.

(Can it be reused if I can manage to provide gunpowder?)

Regardless of whether they can be reused or not, Yoichi decided to continue collecting used bullets as much as possible, since they didn’t take that much space in his [Infinite Storage+].

(Well, I guess I’ll continue a little longer.)

After that, Yoichi continued to kill some more monsters.

After searching a bit, a Blade Rabbit, a rabbit-type monster with ears made into blades, showed up nearby Yoichi, but as its distance was no different from the spear rabbit, he was able to take the initiative and kill it before it acted on him.

A group of five Forest Hounds, dog-shaped monsters, then appeared. The Forest Hound, which has a rank of G for defeating it alone, has a rank of E for defeating it in groups of three or more, but it was not much of a threat to Yoichi, who was able to grasp its position and thoughts to some extent through [Appraisal+] right away.

Goblins, which have become synonymous with small fry in fantasy stories, also made their appearance.

The goblins were about 140 centimetres tall, with green skin, ugly, humanoid faces with no hair on their heads, thick muscles despite their height, and slender frames with no excess fat, and they seemed to be roaming around the forest in groups.

Yoichi held up his pistol and took aim at one passing his range.

Though it was described as having a humanoid face and build, the goblins he could see beyond his sights were clearly different from humans. It had an ugly appearance, a distorted shape, and a skin colour that could not possibly be human. No matter how you look at them, they are not human, but the mere fact that they are humanoid had somehow brought up a strange feeling in him.

It was strange to see several of them wandering around the forest in a group, and perhaps because of their short stature, if not for their cursed faces, they looked like children playing together from afar.

Yoichi took his sights off the gun and hid himself behind a tree.

“Fuuuhhh………”

He put his hand, still holding the gun, on his chest, then looked up to the sky and let out a big breath.

(Ugh ……, it’s kind of hard to do because it’s humanoid ……)

However, Yoichi knows that if he couldn’t hunt goblins, it will be difficult for him to live in this world.

If the other side notices him first, being the monster they are, the goblins will immediately attack to take Yoichi’s life.

Yes, monsters, even humanoid ones, do attack people. Yoichi has already confirmed this.

It is said that monsters don’t need to eat because the magic stones in their bodies can absorb the magical power floating in the air and use it as energy for their activities.

Despite this, monsters still attack people and eat their dead flesh.

Sometimes they even eat them alive.

It was hypothesized that they ‘enhance’ the magic power that flows through their bodies by eating people, while some say that they simply enjoy the taste of human flesh as a pastime, but no clear reason has been found. However, it was certain that monsters do attack people on sight.

Since that was always the case, it became an unspoken law here that you should hit them before you get hit.

“Fuuuhhh……!!”

Yoichi let out another short breath, looked out from behind the trees, and took aim with his gun. The goblins still seemed to be frolicking innocently behind the sights, making the thought of shooting them uneven his breathing and quicken his heartbeat even more.

“Fuuuhh……”

Keeping his aim still, Yoichi exhaled quietly but more deeply this time to calm himself down. After constant breathing in this way, he felt his heart rate eventually calm down and his mind become clearer with each exhale.

(……Ready.)

He was mildly surprised to find himself in a near-normal state of mind in less than ten seconds, but he didn’t mind it for now to keep his aim clear.

Then, putting his finger on the trigger,

Bang!! Bang!!

Two gunshots echoed in the forest.

The goblin, who had been hit once in the eyebrow and once in the chest, fell to the ground, and Yoichi quickly hid himself behind a tree.

Then, “Gyaaaagyaaaaa!!” that sounded neither like a bird nor a beast reached his ears.

However, to Yoichi, it sounded like an anguished cry of some pained being.

(I killed……I, I killed……I killed……!!)

Yoichi’s heart, which had been calm earlier, started beating wildly again.

Cold sweat broke out all over his body, his hands trembled, and his breathing became erratic.

(That’s a monster ……. That’s a monster ……! It’s not a person!!!)

Pressing his hands, still holding the gun, tightly against his chest, Yoichi closed his eyes and looked up to the heavens, shouting in his mind as if he were repenting a great sin.

After telling himself that goodness knows how many times, his mind calmed down like it was a lie. His heart as well, has returned to its normal rate, his sweat receded, and his hands stopped shaking.

With some surprise at the quick change in his body and mind, Yoichi emerged from the shade of the tree again.

The few goblins that remained were alerting their surroundings and screaming all over the place, while one of them is crouching down at the fallen goblin, shaking its body in its shoulders as if to confirm its state.

Yoichi felt a stinging pain in his chest at the sight, but it quickly disappeared after a few seconds.

Soon, the goblin’s screams that reached his ears became nothing more than noise for the man.

It was then when a large monster appeared, clearly different from the previous ones had seen.

It was a huge bear.
