Chapter 9 – Procurement of Equipment

“It’s about time I start my conquest in this other world…… I don’t know where to start, though.”

Like any common worker in a peaceful country with a proud heritage, Yoichi didn’t have the concept of traveling to other lands.

Language barriers, money, time, and even the motivation and purpose of doing it are lacking for someone as ordinary as Yoichi.

But even a person like him knew that he has to prepare the very basics when traveling on foreign soil.

But this time, this is another world, and a fantasy world at that, so he won’t be needing passports and the like.

What he needs is equipment.

And because this is another world, it wasn’t just on the level of procuring hiking equipment, as he is now entering another dimension in which anyone and everyone can be hostile to him at any time.

And because of that, he needed something to be able to fight back.

For now, he started by knowing the terrain he will be traveling in.

Yoichi activated one of the functions of [Return+], which is the function of checking the home point from a remote location, and checked the situation in the other world he was about to jump into. He had learned his lesson in the  ‘vicious rabbit incident’ that almost took him his life.

Soon as he focused his attention, the otherworldly scenery entered his field of vision in the form of a duplicate screen, and only when he closed his eyes, was he able to see the scenery of the otherworldly world in a 360 degree.

(It feels weird using it this way.)

Though Yoichi had never actually experienced using one before, he felt he was using a head-mounted display type VR device – it just gives him this kind of feeling.

He didn’t feel like he was actually standing there, but instead felt like he was looking at the monitor from a distance, which was even more strange as he was used to looking at a monitor in his whole life.

“Oh, there you are.”

Yoichi spotted a giant rabbit with horns that he has seen several times before.

As [Appraisal+] seemed to work fine even from a remote location, he examined it with the skill, and it turned out to be a demon called Spear Rabbit.

It was also about the size of a large dog.

Upon browsing its details, Yoichi then decided to look for weapons and armor that could fight this thing, and after observing enough, he cancelled his [Return+]. He then looked at various online stores to consider what kind of equipment he should use. The first thing that caught his eye was a shield made of polycarbonate material – called a Riot Shield.

(Can this even take a charge from that big one? But it’s better than nothing)

Upon browsing its specs, Yoichi found out that the material seemed to be strong enough to protect against small-caliber bullets, so he decided on buying it, thinking that it would be able to withstand at least one blow.

There was a round shield type and a large shield type, but as Yoichi is not short of money, he decided to buy both.

(Ah, I need something that can be used as armor too. Is there one? Ooh, there is……)

After the shield, Yoichi decided to buy armor, so he did a search at a major online store and found sheet metal armor that protects the entire body, similar to what medieval knights wore.

(Can I even move with this?)

Yoichi imagined himself wearing the armor, but all he could see was him walking a few steps, falling down, and flailing around, unable to get up like a beetle.

(……rejected, I guess.)

However, now that he has imagined himself in armor, Yoichi can now see in which direction he should be buying the armor, and the discrepancies he needs to fill in.

(Emphasis on ease of movement. For now, I’ll base its size on my usual work clothes.)

(After all, it’s not worth it if you can’t perform at your usual level by wearing unfamiliar clothes. As for the shield, I can just stash it in the [Infinite Storage+] if I don’t need it. Now that I think of it, let’s add something easy to put on and take off and replace our work clothes with that)

With that, Yoichi decided that his first priority is to get out of that forest, all while moving as nimbly as possible through the deep woods infested with giant monsters which are literally out of this world.

As he imagined this, something suddenly flashed in Yoichi’s mind.

(That’s right, Airsoft!)

If it was the kind of equipment used in these survival games, where people dressed in military gear shoot each other with airsoft guns in a natural environment, such as a deep forest, it should be even more suitable for action in Jana forest.

With this, Yoichi looked around on the Internet to see what kind of equipment was available for airsoft games.

(Hmmm…… helmet, vest, and protector. I guess I’d better have gloves, too.)

While referring to airsoft websites for some tips, Yoichi bought a military helmet, a bulletproof vest, protectors for his elbows and knees, and tactical gloves that allow him to move his fingers freely.

(Still, I don’t think I’ll fit in this fantasy world of swords and magic. It’s very lore-breaking, after all, and will definitely catch the otherworld people’s attention.)

So Yoichi decided to look for something that would cover his entire body.

Cloaks, robes, and ponchos were the first things that came to his mind.

(Oh, this robe looks nice).

What he saw first was a black robe of a ‘knight costume’ from a famous space war movie in the west, so he decided to buy it straight away.

Next was a weapon. Perhaps it was because he was looking at military goods, the first thing Yoichi thought of was a survival knife.

(Let’s try to get the one with the largest blade as possible……military-grade machetes? Hmmm. Let’s go with that for now.)

Yoichi chose a military machete, which has a relatively long and thick blade among the knives sold on the Internet.

The straight, single-edged machete looked somewhat easy to use. However, to be honest, even he finds it difficult to fight the Spear Rabbit with it.

(This is just for self-defense, I guess. In that case, I should procure a weapon that can be used for long-distance attacks, but what can an amateur like me buy and use? Bows?)

(I’ve never shot a bow before in my life, but I have a feeling that I could use a crossbow.)

However, when Yoichi looked around at sites and videos explaining crossbows, he found out that it already takes a lot of work just to pull the string and hold the arrow after firing.

(It would be difficult to use it as a solo weapon, unless you’re in a party with several people and have a vanguard.)

With this, Yoichi couldn’t help it anymore, but to choose something else that is more reliable and is much easier to use.

And that is a gun.

〇●〇●

“Adding two negatives will never have a positive result. But multiplying two minuses will always give you a plus.”

In this belief, wouldn’t inflicting damage to anti-social organizations through criminal acts be, on the contrary, a significant contribution to society?

(Yes, let’s just say it does.)

It’s three o’clock in the morning, the time when even the trees and grass are still sleeping, or as the sayings would say,

Yoichi is right now ‘visiting’ a certain apartment building.

From all appearances, It looked like a very ordinary apartment, but that is because it is indeed one.

And the people who actually live there were also ordinary people.

All of them, except for a single unit.

It is because this apartment unit is actually an arsenal for the so-called ‘anti-social forces.’[1]

When Yoichi found out about such arsenal, he first thought of port warehouses but then found out that scary people these days don’t use such “cliched” places anymore.

It is probably because it is more convenient to have them in the neighborhood rather than having to go to a place far from the base to get them in case of emergency.

Beforehand, Yoichi did a search and appraisal of this place using search terms that sounded like the underworld would use when it comes to guns, and from the appraisal results, he was able to quickly identify the nearby places where the firearms were stored.

Of course, the apartment has an auto-lock function, but the PIN number is already meaningless in front of the [Appraisal+] of Yoichi.

Still, just in case, he pressed the number pad with a hand that was wearing a thin surgical glove to avoid fingerprint traces, and just like that, he easily unlocked the door and entered the apartment.

Of course, there would be security cameras, but this posed no problem since he came prepared with a blond wig and mask in disguise.

And of course, there’s no way these people would use any kind of face recognition here, as even they don’t want to be ID’d.

Finally, Yoichi arrived in front of a room in the apartment that was used as an armory.

He has already confirmed that no one is inside the room.

Since it is a small apartment for a single person, Yoichi was easily able to measure the farthest point of the room from the entrance door. It was within 10 meters, that is to say, within the perfect range of [Infinite Storage+].

Yoichi ran a search on “firearms and ammunition” and found a number of arrows pointing to guns and bullets that were probably in a safe or something in the room.

Using the automated loot function, he stowed them all away in one command.

(Alright!)

After that, Yoichi then moved to the camera’s blind spot, activated [Return+], and returned to his home.

〇●〇●

“Ohoh, this is quite heavy……”

Yoichi let out a squeal of excitement as he picked up a pistol that he got from the arsenal of those scary people.

It was a pistol with a star emblem on its grip, a favorite trademark that was commonly patronized by Japan’s underworld.[2]

While most pistols used by them are of .38 caliber, this pistol is a smaller .30 caliber, but it is said to be comparable to a .45 caliber pistol in terms of penetrating power, and is more preferred by amateurs for its ease of handling and cost performance. Because of this preference, Yoichi was able to obtain five of the same pistols, ten spare magazines, and five hundred rounds of ammunition from the armory.

Yoichi, looking at the guns in his hands with a grin on his face, almost forgotten about the fact that he is now breaking the law on having illegal possession of firearms, but he decided not to worry about it as this time, it was necessary in his situation, added to the fact that he is also having a contribution to the country by disarming groups that are proven to be a menace to the modern society.

The next day, Yoichi decided to hold a shooting exercise.

The location should be a problem, but he already had the convenient training ground for it, which is in another world.

The first thing he did was to check the situation from a remote location.

After looking around from the subjective point of view, and not seeing anything that looked like a monster, he immediately activated [Return +].

“Oh, I’m here in a jiffy.”

Yoichi was already wearing his work outfit, complete with his safety shoes and his down jacket as usual.

Before this, he has also relocated his Home Point 2 to the entrance of his unit, just behind the front door, so he’ll no longer need to clean the dirt he will be making upon arriving from another location.

As for the equipment he ordered, some would arrive on a day at the earliest, but it would still take about a week for everything to be ready, so he decided to practice shooting while keeping an eye out for monsters in the meantime.

Of course, he has already done a safety net before this. Using the terms “demons,” “Beasts,” Monsters,” and “People,” he set a reminder so that the system would be able to notify him of such beings within a 100-meter radius of his location, as long as this fits his search criteria.

At first, Yoichi searched for “beings that are detecting him right now,” but the number of arrows turned out to be so many that it filled his screen as it also pointed to insects and microorganisms, so he narrowed down his search to the general terms of the larger species that are likely to put him in harm’s way.

Upon finding out that there’s no existence in his specifications that recognized him anymore, Yoichi took out the pistol from the [Infinite Storage+] and held it up to his eye level.

As he was used to gun shooting games that requires to aim his sights, he used that as reference and aimed at a tree trunk about five meters away before pulling the trigger.

BANG!

A short burst of gunfire sounded, and Yoichi watched as the bullet went and gouged the side of the tree trunk he was aiming at.

“I didn’t feel as much recoil as I thought I would. Looks like it’s gonna be fine.”

Though he missed the target a little even though he was aiming at the center, it was already above expectations for Yoichi, who has just experienced shooting a live round on a real gun for the first time.

Perhaps in response to the gunshot, some arrows indicating appraisal results suddenly popped up in his vision.

However, as the distance of the arrows was still far, he fired the second, then the third round in succession, and this time, applying even more caution.

Little by little, the number of search result arrows increased, and some of them gradually came closer to Yoichi, but none of them came closer than 20 to 30 meters, as if they were wary of the sound they had never heard before.

Yoichi waited for a bit, and after judging that the situation is still safe, he decided to continue his practice shooting.

After emptying the rest of the rounds in his current mag, he returned the unloaded gun in the [Infinite Storage+] and exchanged it for a spare one.

Yoichi’s [Infinite Storage+] also has an automatic maintenance function which ensures that the gun would be in the best condition possible when pulled out of the storage, so there was no need to worry about taking care of the guns as this has already eliminated every possible problem such as bullet jams.

But while it is possible to replace only the magazine, Yoichi had heard somewhere that the barrel of a gun gets hot after firing many shots in a row, and this can lead to loss of accuracy and malfunction, and even backfire, so he decided to replace the entire gun instead of just the magazine.

Thus, the only thing he should be worried about is its prolonged use when it’s out of his inventory.

The number of rounds in the pistol he has ‘borrowed’ is nine, and that consists of one round in the chamber and eight in the magazine.

Yoichi spared not a single pistol in his arsenal. After using all five of them in his storage, he then took out the pistol that first ran out of ammo. After dropping the empty mag to the ground, he took out the spare magazine loaded with ammunition from the [Infinite Storage+] and quickly reloaded it in place.

As long as it is within 10 meters, any non-sentient being and things can be stored without touching it, so using that feature, he recovered the empty mags he had dropped on the ground and stashed it in his [Infinite Storage+].

Overall in this round, Yoichi had spent 10 spare mags with 8 rounds each mag, so he had shot 125 rounds in total, and that includes the bullets loaded in each of the 5 pistols (1 bullet in chamber, 8 bullets in the mag).

By that time, Yoichi’s accuracy had improved considerably, and he has even learned how to stow the empty mags before they hit the ground, which dramatically improved his ability to change mags.

(Could it be that I have a talent for shooting?)

Even though it is a small-caliber gun, firing it for this long should already be quite tiring for an average person, and it should be even more so for a first-time gunner like Yoichi, as the impact of shooting is felt not only in the hand that was holding the gun, but also in the arms, shoulder, and the whole body. In addition to the shock, the sound of the gunshot should also be enough for one’s ears to go deaf, and Yoichi wasn’t even using any protective equipment on him at all, not even goggles or earmuffs.

However, Yoichi wasn’t even affected one bit by these due to the blessing of [Healthy Body+], which allowed him to recover from fatigue and pain immediately.

And that’s not all.

Whenever his body or organs were damaged by shocks or gunshots, they would recover abnormally fast. This is due to the effect of “super recovery,” in which he would ‘regrow’ the damaged tissues rapidly, albeit little by little.

“Super-recovery,” as its name says, is a state of natural recovery of the body, similar to recovering from a sickness and creating antibodies for the said sickness so you won’t easily get sick with that same disease later on.

It is not a ‘restoration’ which is a phenomenon in which a damaged part of the body ‘returns’ to its ‘undamaged’ state, but a function in which the state of the body ‘repairs’ and ‘improves’ the body to adapt to the changes.

Another example of this would be the enlargement of muscles after recovery from muscle pain caused by strength training.

To sum up, Yoichi has in fact, already obtained a growth cheat through the blessing of [Healthy Body+], which allows him to grow abnormally fast the more he works out.

But all of it was still unknown for the young man…at least for now.

Translator Notes:

[1]. Anti-Social Forces. Those were the words that the government use to refer to Organized Crime Syndicates, or to put it in the most famous terms – the Yakuza.

According to the wiki: The term ‘anti-social forces’ (反社会的勢力) is officially used by the Japanese government to refer to the organized crime groups (Japanese Mafia = Boryokudan/yakuza) and their members, corporate racketeers, and groups that have the potential for violence or social unrest. It sometimes includes serial fraudsters, as well.

[2]. What Yoichi should be referring to should be either of the two: the TT-30 or also known as the Tokarev, or the iconic Makarov Pistol. As far as what I have searched, only the Tokarev has .30 caliber, but Makarov is more “beginner user friendly” as Makarov is the successor of Tokarev. Then again, I’m illiterate when it comes to guns, so correct me in the comments if I’m wrong. This is the only one that matches the .30 caliber Russian pistol with a star emblem in its grip in my search engine results.

TT-30 Tokarev

Pistolét Makárova, or Makarov’s Pistol
