I always took the... umbrella thingy... saying they were the last two living humans except maybe on the top level to mean that Kanazawa and Ishii didn't make it. Also, they said they didn't eat LIVING humans, though I doubt that's the solution for the bodies. Vaguely reminds me of this game I played (don't remember the name of it) where all of the dead bodies were "hidden" by pink paint because the protagonist's psyche was protecting them from the consequences of their actions.

This kind of tells me they don't show up in any future manga material, a shame. It could also mean that the difference between 4 humans alive and 2, or 0, is so negligible as to be irrelevant. Reminds me of how they did the faces for large portions of A Silent Voice.
