I was sent an early release of Simplify3D version 5.0 and told I couldn’t talk about it until today. Well now I can say, it seems they haven’t kept up with what’s available for free.

It’s interface is cleaned up a bit but it’s missing features that I take for granted in Cura or PrusaSlicer, such as simply placing a specific side of a print flat on the bed. I had to enter 270° rotation in the axis controls to get my print where I wanted it. This is an old feature in Cura.

Correction: That feature has been there (Thanks Phil) in the Edit menu “Place Surface on bed” or CTRL- L. My mistake.

Overall it still slices well. The print results were good but no better than my Cura profiles but my Extra Fast were faster.

I’ve only been using it a few days but I just don’t see what took so long to release. Free slicers are way ahead now.

And they charge for the upgrade (unless you bought it within the last 12 months).

I hoped it would be a lot better but I just don’t see it.

Update: You can only use it on one computer now, not two as before. I miss this since I liked it on both my Mac and my Windows laptop.

I think it's really too much money to improve my 3DV4. For the last two years I was more suprised by Cura and Prusa what they deliver for Free!

I upgraded with the $10 discount and have had a chance to test drive it for several practical prints. Every criticism is true but at the same time the same features I always used have been improved and I have to say that the finish (print quality) of the prints, especially the top layers or solid layers, are very much improved. I'm OG having used S3D for 5+ years and it still has the best interface and gets my idea on the printer the fastest with great results. I would not recommend someone pay the $200 entry fee (mid $50 seems fair - still has the best and most intuitive interface and a few other features like support placement and slicer speed) but for an avid S3D user like me, I feel it is worth the upgrade. My biggest beef is limiting it to run on one machine - I am writing them to urge them to allow two computers on one license but only one active at any time to be fair. If they continue to fix the bugs and add features on a timely basis, there is still life left in this slicer.
