Connor has said that there were more than two of Annie and Tabitha.  Tabitha probably jokingly argues that they don't look anything like them.  Connor say they'll have to fight them in a competition.  Even though their suits can self-repair, they're already showing signs of wear internally.  The only option to get two reliable suits is to have extra parts.

==Page 528==

Tabitha asks what happens to anyone who loses, and Connor says that they'll be involved in creating new suits.  But the process will take at least years.  Tabitha worries Annie might not hate that option, and tries to build up that they have to win.  Connor then tells them Annie and Tabitha won't be a team, they'll have to compete individually.

On the next page, either Annie or Lucy notice there are only eight.  How could you have an even competition down to two with that number?  It'll be eight one-on-one, then the four winners will be randomly paired up into two two-on-two teams.  So it might be that only Tabitha or Annie could win-- but paired up with a different teammate.
