I love the romantic ending. It's tragic, but I have heard that every romance ends in tragedy, one way or another. Which is sad, but hard to argue with. I do like the general theory that Hill House was a commentary on mental disorders and depression/addiction in particular, while Bly is addressing long term terminal illness. The "monster in the dark" has been used to describe such illnesses during the good times, before the disease becomes debilitating. And you feel that so keenly in the second half of this episode. They're both waiting for the inevitable, knowing it'll come far too soon. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
