I think the main reason why Luke isn't so torn up by the death of his family is because of Mark Hamill's acting skills. This was his first ever role that he got on a whim, he had no acting experience prior to making these movies, and you'll notice throughout the Original Trilogy (IV-V-VI) that his acting skills improve each movie
