Got bored, and started working on something new!

This is a very early draft of an Alternate Bard Class, so don't get too attached to anything here as things are likely to change.

I've always thought that the Bard had untapped potential, but their power budget as a class is limited by the fact that they are full spellcasters. So, I'm working on a half-caster Bard with a much greater emphasis on Bardic Inspiration, party support, and social support.

I'm really excited about their Countersong ability! Is it too strong? Or, is it just powerful enough to be a class-defining feature and carve out a niche for Bards as the ultimate anti-mage? I've also brought Magical Secrets down to levels where it will actually be used in games (don't get used to eldritch blast being a choice).

Bardic Traditions have replaced Colleges (such an odd nomenclature choice), and with subclass features at 5th (and eventually 11th and 15th level) I'll be able to do some very cool and powerful things depending on the theme. Loremasters, aka College of Lore, can lean into Bardic Inspiration and Magical Secrets, while the Skald can get Extra Attack and become a true martial Bard!

Oh, I've also made Vicious Mockery a much better option!

Am I way off-base with this?

Does anyone care about Bards other than me?

Let me know in the comments!

I Like the Idea, maybe instead of an Alternate Bard it could be an new Class Like Troubadour or Skald...

Maybe! I’m pretty set on the idea of it being a half-caster though. Let’s see how it continues to develop!

Looking good for a 1st draft! Countersong looks pretty interesting, but would likely need play testing to determine if it's too strong. I like the change of Bard Colleges becoming Traditions, as well as Magical Secrets being introduced earlier. Maybe Song of Rest could be replaced with an Invocation style feature, where the Bard can learn various songs/performances which it can use over a short or long rest to grant their party buffs. Would go a long way to make them feel like the support class, plus more customisation is always fun, and since it occurs over a rest it would be pretty easy for new players to get the hang of.
