So, I sat down at my Mac today to start work and was greeted by a flashing " ? " on my screen, basically telling me my hard drive failed. (Follow up scans and diagnoses confirmed that the hard drive was offline and not accessible or formatable.)

Don't worry!  ALL my work is saved on an external back-up drive as well in the cloud (using Carbonite). Back-ups perform automatically everyday.

However, I cannot do any work until I get my computer back. I just dropped it off today and it's in queue to be diagnosed on Monday. Hopefully, they will install a new drive right away and I can be back to work by the end next week (after reinstalling everything).

This is a good time to remind everyone that a hard drive crash/failure is not a matter of "if it will happen" but "when will it happen"!  ALWAYS have a copy of your files on a separate drive. (Don't put the only copy on one drive; have it on two minimum.)

You can say, "well, you just hit rolled a '1' on a D20."  No. I actually had THREE hard drive failures in the last month!  One external back-up died (I have two) when I raised my standing desk and a snagged wire pulled the drive off the desk to the floor. I bought a new replacement and THAT failed last week within 2 DAYS of purchase (I am still awaiting a credit for its return). THEN, my main computer drive failed today.  :~(

Back up your files now. Buy an external drive or subscribe to an automatic cloud back-up now.

I will keep you informed on when I expect my Mac to be back in business.

I think you've been cursed. I recommend seeking professional assistance.

Fortune favors the prepared. Have a good time computer free!

Well said! I had a hard drive failure after 8 years using my laptop and I was not prepared for it so I didn’t back it up and all data is lost!

Just when I thought you couldn't get any cooler, you throw in a D20 reference. If only my D&D commissions had gotten more votes. Anyways, I hope your computer makes a quick recovery BA!

How does this keep happening to you? Are you some sort technology black hole? Jokes aside, I'm glad you were prepared for it at least. Hope this is the last one for a long while.

Wow sorry for your troubles. I’m glad you kept all of your backups. You’re right to keep extra hard drives just in case

Sorry to hear. I was glad I had a back up drive when mine failed a couple of years ago. You can never be too careful.
