Hey everyone!!!  Here it is - my reaction to vol 7 episodes 8 and 9 of RWBY!!!  Oh wow, I've gotta say, I really felt for Winter having to try and stay calm during that dinner!  He knew ALL the buttons to press, ugh!  And finally, we get to meet MOM!!!  Aka Willow!  I have to say, she's a lot more aware than I thought she'd be.  And she seems very scared, paranoid, and closed off, which figures considering all that she's been through in that house.  Gotta say though, she really came through with that recording!!!  And boy oh boy, WHAT A SCENE when Weiss arrests Jacques!!!!!  I can't remember the last time I was that happy LOL!!!
But we've got other things to deal with thanks to Jacques infiltration of the whole system here, starting with the heating.  I'm so, so glad that Robyn and Ironwood are on the same page now, and that we are choosing trust over fear/lack of communication/etc.!  I was proud of Ruby for making the decision to tell Ironwood, too - thanks Oscar, for taking care of that!  Gotta say, James handled it better than I'd anticipated!  And last but not least, that conspicuously cute server turns out to be a familiar face....!!!!  I had almost forgotten we still had Neo and Cinder to worry about!  Great eps!  Enjoy!!  ~ MH

DINNER TIME!

kamenriderhime

$10 says NO ONE was able to enjoy their food through all the tension, frustration and awkwardness :/ Except it had a pretty great finale though hahha!

Okay but can we appreciate the visual storytelling they had going on with the dinner table scene! The way they had both Jacques and Ironwood on the far ends of each other, showcasing how they directly oppose one another, and then Robyn smack bam inbetween them both, emphasizing her current dislike of the both of them but also where she stands in terms of ideology. Just excellent visual storytelling. An interesting thing I always like to note when we enter the Schnee mansion, aside from the amazing-ness of Qrow chatting with Clover and him being firm in his soberness, is the way Marrow reacts to the faunus waiting staff - he does not enjoy being there at all. Can we also appreciate Robyn being a real one and not mentioning she knew anything about the tower to the others until Ep 9? Like she could've but she didnt. I feel for the Schnee family so much, all of their experiences in that house have shaped who they are today but it hurts to think that anyone, let alone a mother and her children, had to go through what they undoubtedly did with Jacques. Poor Winter, but I'm glad her and Penny were able to have a conversation about it, because with both her childhood and her military upbringing Winter probably views any out of turn speaking - no matter how justified or necessary - as almost unforgivable or at the least a bad thing to do. But, like Penny says, speaking from the heart - what you truly think, feel or believe - isn't a bad thing. I just really like their dynamic; a wonderful play on whose more "robotic" in a sense ya know? Willow coming through with the Watts identity reveal and suddenly Detective Weiss Schnee is able to put the pieces together! But yikes, Mantle has been seemingly continuously screwed over and now they have to deal with an unexplained lack of heat? In a kingdom where if you dont have a protective aura or heat you die in a matter of hours? Yeah... no wonder the Grimm showed up. I'm glad our main crew were able to reconcile and get everything they needed across, there is one thing I find worrying though, after the explanation Ironwood was very very quiet on how the truth actually made him feel...and Ironwood has been known to blow up when things get too hectic, so that just makes me wonder how he really feels about the WHOLE truth, but for now he seems to want to focus on the matter at hand instead of that, so we'll see how that goes. Now our only issue is just a matter of sticking together through the crisis. Or that would be the case of our favorite flavor of icecream and or least favorite maiden hadn't shown up. With them in the mix, plus Watts, Tyrian and hordes of Grimm our heroes are in for quite a long night. Last minute thought: Also like... Mantle's defenses have been broken with no signs of repair for like however long the kids have been in Atlas... and their surprised the Grimm made it in so quickly? Like I get that they needed resources for Amity...but what good is a global communication tower meant to unite the world gonna do if a large population of people's safety is sacrificed because of it. If it had been fixed a little earlier, maybe the Grimm may not have rushed in as easily and the people wouldn't be as mad as they are at Atlas and Ironwood. I just feel like in looking at the bigger picture Ironwood seemed to underestimate the smaller things that mattered just as much, which is something that added to the situation. Anyways superb reactions as always, the Atlas arc gets more and more intense from here so I hope you're prepared! Looking forward to your next set and I hope you have a great rest of your day!

Hi Hime :) About Oscar and Ozpin, remember what the god of light used to say "like minded soul", so yes it was 100% Oscar, but other than their experiences they are not totally different. Oscar is arguably very close to the original Ozma. The discussion between Weiss and Willow hurts, because you can see that they are making each other suffer. When Weiss says for example that SHE acts at least, you can see that it hurts Willow and that's why she takes the bottle. But when she drinks, she also sees in Weiss's face, that it pains her to see her mother like that. But at least if anything good can come of it, it's that Weiss's evolution allows her to push her mother a bit like that and understand her mother's words "don't forget Witley". Now about Penny and Winter, you can see that they are pretty close casually, but also that one can wonder which of the two is a robot... And I think Penny's last sentence, really made Winter's head tilt and gave her some food for thought. Episode 9 is still more of a set-up for all the final events, which begins in the next episode. Get ready for even more looping, going up and down in the big emotional roller coaster. Keep the tissue box nearby, you will need it. And just as a teaser, if you thought the Battle of Heaven in Volume 5 or Argus in Volume 6 was epic, CRWBY has upped the level again 😉.

great reaction to these episodes. First off I'm gonna start using the phrase whatever sprinkles your doughnut so thank you for that. I hope Klein is ok after being fired. So glad we finally get to see Momma Schnee. Don't really like seeing Penny being sad so with things now turning around hopefully that will change. Oh yea the ship name for Oscar and Ruby is rose garden. So good to see Jacques get arrested but now Neo (who is tied for best girl for me) and Cinder are now in Mantle so what are they gonna do now. Can't wait for next week

Weiss: "Jacques Schnee. You're under arrest." *looks at Ironwood* "Can I do that?" - BEST LINE These episodes are good on their own but they really work at building the suspense and story even more towards what's to come. Us meeting Willow was also an important step in Weiss' development. I think when she said that she installed cameras everywhere and the reason why that Weiss got even more of an idea how difficult this situation has been for her mom. She knew her side of it and maybe a little of Winter's side but she probably didn't know how her mom was doing or saw how Whitley is being manipulated the way Willow did. So while she might not be happy with how her mom decided to handle things (i.e. drinking in solitude) Weiss probably understands it better now. Jacques getting his comeuppance and the fact that it's Weiss herself that calls him out on his BS is simply glorious. As mentioned above, her being the one to arrest him is so fitting. She knew something was wrong and that her dad was involved and she put it all together in the end. Weiss Schnee: Private Eye. A note of reference which I always find interesting: The large painting of the man in the dining room is actually of Nicholas Schnee, Willow's father. He was the founder of the Schnee Dust Company as mentioned in the World of Remnant episode and he is supposed to reference Santa Claus with the red cape and gold trim. The idea of the RWBY Santa looking down on Jacques being arrested makes me smile. Next week has a ton of surprises and then the following week is the finale so strap in cause we're going on a ride! See ya then.

Fun Fact: Willow's name wasn't officially revealed until Volume 7. The RWBY community came up with Willow and were blown away when that turned to be her real name.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

The writers were definitely pushing a Black Sun ship when we first met Sun back in volume 1...evidence with the choir sound when he winked at her. She also blushed big time in volume 3 when he pointed at her after winning his 4 on 4 match in the Vytal Festival. I think since volume 5 in my opinion is when they listened to the fans and started to steer towards the Bumblebee ship. I think its nice when they give the fans something they want. Especially when it really doesn't effect the main plot line. I do think they brushed over how Sunn was and probably still is in love with Blake in the first episode of volume 6. Having him tell Neptune it was never about that when he pointed out to Sunn he was just kinda letting her go was obscured. He obviously had/has feelings for her .

I'm rewatching all your old reactions, and 2x10 opens with Ironwood talking to Goodwitch about trust and his concerns about Ozpin keeping them in the dark. Glynda also mentions Ironwood always doing what he thinks is best for the people, "even against strong protest," which has also come up a few times this volume. It's neat to see how far back a lot of these themes go.

So Chapter 8 was originally the last episode to air before Xmas that year, giving us an ominous note to pause on until the show came back in the new year...It's always interesting to see which reactors put together that Watts turned off the heating, causing the rain to turn to snow and when the child gets excited to see snow it's not a cute or heartwarming thing but a dark portent....namely that people are going to start freezing to death, especially Mantle's homeless population. Watts at his most villainous. The show never says one way or the other, but I like to believe that Arthur Watts & Jacques Schnee are actually brothers...their character designs are similar, right down to the "evil" mustache. Chapter 9 is so hopeful and it's great to see everyone on the same page and united in the face of adversity. And as others have said, yes, the #Rosegarden (Oscar x Ruby) ship is adorable...even Marrow notices their awkward flirtation. #NutsandDolts (Penny x Ruby) is Lindsay Jones's personal favorite (Ruby's VA). Speaking of voice actors, Willow Schnee is voiced by Caitlin Glass who is the English voice of Winry Rockbell of Fullmetal Alchemist, Melie of Radiant, and Mina Ashido of My Hero Academia, among many other prominent anime roles.

I always think the dinner party is a great example of that 'Heartbreaking: The worst person you know just made a great point' joke. Like, obviously Jacques is terrible and is only doing this for bad reasons, but a lot of the criticisms that are getting thrown at Ironwood there are pretty fair. Even some of what he says in his defense are a little nasty, like the 'Penny is completely under my control' line, even if he was trying to emphasise the fact that Penny didn't do anything wrong at the warehouse it really comes off like he's saying that she has no free will of her own, that she isn't in control of herself. Still, at least we've got a good ending to all that, with Ironwood being able to acknowledge some of the mistakes he's made along the way and open up to both the council and Robyn, and it turn our heroes deciding that they can trust him right back. Like you I was pretty worried about how that was all gonna come out back when I was watching this for the first time, and how he would react, so it was nice for that all to end positively, even if it did clearly shock Ironwood a whole lot. But of course, the most important part of the episode was the return of my beloved Cinder, along with Neo. Ugh, I'll never get over how much I love Cinder's outfit for this arc, she looks so cool leaning there ominously. Funny detail, in their hotel room you can see a half-eaten dinner on the table, suggesting that Cinder was in the middle of eating when Neo returned. But, when Neo actually enters the room Cinder's off leaning against the wall, which I like to imagine means that she was eating, heard the door start to open, and then quickly jumped up and raced over there so that she could look more dramatic. That scene certainly wouldn't have had the same impact if when Neo walked in Cinder was just sitting there awkwardly with a mouth full of takeout sdfsdfs.

Manny

Anyone else wanted to do a happy dance after the second episode? 💃

kamenriderhime

Oh wow!!!!!! That's awesome that they went with the name that the fans had come up with!!!!!!

kamenriderhime

I kinda felt that as well. But I'm glad they listened to popular demand! Hmm, I could see how they glossed over his feelings a bit....then again, seeing as how he's a laid back and cheerful guy, maybe that was just his way of trying to accept it and move on??? Not sure!!

kamenriderhime

Oh nice!!! Wow, they really were playing the long game this whole time huh??? I really need to go back and see some of those scenes now that so much has happened since!!! Thanks for the info!

kamenriderhime

You are SO right about the visual storytelling here!!! I love how every detail matters in this show. Qrow confirming his sobriety made me so happy!!! And Marrow, awww I totally get why that would be terribly uncomfortable for him. Hahah yup, so true about Robyn!!! Gotta play it close to the vest sometimes I guess!!! I adored the scene with Winter and Penny! So true that we get to see who is more "robotic" for sure, never even thought of that! And I love Winter getting to hear that it's okay to speak from your heart, since this is something she is clearly not very comfortable with. YES!!!! Willow and Detective Weiss for the win! Uggghh I know, poor Mantle!!! As if they hadn't been through enough. I see what you mean about Ironwood, perhaps any tension and true feelings will rise to the surface later on...?? We'll see! OMG, seriously, we are in for quite the fight, especially with Neo and Cinder showing up too. Yeah, good point about the defenses in Mantle. Sadly, some of this might be the result of neglect to their resources. I think you have a great point that those small decisions add up and can have some big consequences!!! YAY, so happy you enjoyed my reaction, thank you!!! Have a great one!!!! ^_^

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Ahhh yes, good point about the like minded soul! Such a great point that you can see the hurt Willow and Weiss are doing to each other in that scene, although sadly that's probably the only way they know how to interact. So true that it was a good thing though that Weiss heard to not forget Whitley! So true about Winter and Penny, who's more robotic for sure lol! Loved that scene! OMG!!!!!!!! I can't wait for the next eps!!! Thanks!

kamenriderhime

YAY!!! Thank you!!! Hahahaha so happy you like my phrase! :) I'm excited that you're adding it to your repertoire lol! I hope Klein is okay too. Yeah, meeting the mom was a nice surprise! Oh I love the name Rose Garden! Jacques' arrest was everything but good point that things will most likely get real now that Neo (LOVE her!!) and Cinder have arrived!!! Hope you love next week's reaction too!

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

If he just sighed or gave a bit of a my heart just got broken look or something....he spent all of his time in this series so far with Herr up to that point....

Dillon Hansel

I love Neo so much. Absolute favorite side character. She's just so smug and adorable.

kamenriderhime

Hahaha what an awesome moment! Yeah, good point that the cameras were tip off to Weiss about her mom's lifestyle. I think you're right that she's seeing it more from her perspective, at least. Weiss was AMAZING as a detective here, and her being the one to serve him up some fresh justice was just everything! Ohhhh, that was the grandpa? That does make it even more special that he was watching the whole thing haha. Ahhhh can't wait for what's next!!!!!!!!! Thanks! XD

kamenriderhime

Oh okay! Wow, what a note to go out on for the winter break! I wasn't sure what was going on when the rain turned to snow, I would have guessed he was controlling the weather more directly than turning the heat off, but the lack of heat is definitely be devastating! That's a great point about Watts and Jacques, oh wow, they are quite similar now that I think about it! The Rose Garden moment was great, and I love the names of the ships (Nuts and Dolts, omg!!) So fun that that's Lindsay's favorite! WOW, Willow's VA has an amazing resume!!! Thanks for all the info!

kamenriderhime

Ugh, I totally hear you about Jacques' comments at dinner! The criticisms aren't without their validity for sure. So true about the "control" line, too....definitely sadly has more negative undertones to it! Yes, Ironwood showing trust and communication, and handling the truth so well, was really nice! I totally hear you, would not have seen it going that smoothly lol. HAHAAHA I totally did not notice that about the dinner!!! It would hurt the whole vibe if Cinder was stuffing her face, for sure lol!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the info!

kamenriderhime

I'm so sorry, I'm blanking on which part you mean!!! >.< Could you clear it up for me?

SaintLily

they might be talking about when Oscar and Ruby parted, although that wouldn't be entirely accurate since they've been off doing separate things a few times before now

SaintLily

ooh, if you're curious about the favourite ships of the other voice actors, Barbara (Yang) and Arryn (Blake) are both big bumblebee fans, Kara (Weiss) likes white knight (Jaune & Weiss), and as mentioned Lindsay has said that their fave is nuts & dolts. Funnily enough, if you remember a couple of episodes back in 'A Night Off' this is actually how the girls all got split up, Yang and Blake went dancing together, Weiss and Jaune went to the movies, and Ruby met up with Penny at the rally. Probably just a coincidence but still, neat how these things line up sometimes.

kamenriderhime

Oh wow, nice!!! That's good to know, and omg, not sure if that was done on purpose but it really did line up with all the fave ships, didn't it?! :O Thanks for the info!

Supermonaman

I love this episode even though it’s tense and heavy especially with some of the topics that were shown. I enjoy the little conversation about the downsides of Jacques controlling the meeting. Also once again it sucks that Weiss knows her father all too well to be so suspicious of him. I really like the trust everyone displays towards Weiss and the plan to have her spy/sneak around was really smart. I also think it’s nice that most of the characters in that scene get to have a say in things. The Schnee Manor is simply ridiculous in its sheer opulence and size. The cars utilizing gravity dust is really cool. Also the ornament on the hood of the car is a velociraptor and this is a fun reference that was an Easter egg of a silly joke Monty created of the RWBY Raptor that was at least in volume 1 and 2. I love Winter saying that she would need to be paid to smile for this but it’s also sad. I swear Whitley’s voice actor delivers such an enjoyable performance here. It’s so sad that Klein got fired for “daring” to help Weiss. Also after what happens later I really think the interactions he has with Weiss are subconscious cries for help/attention which is deeply depressing. I’m so proud that Qrow is still able to fight against his addiction cold turkey I might add with the source of it right in front of him. I don’t have much to add to the distraction scene except that it’s hilarious and I agree Whitley kind of looks better in pink/purple. Also fun fact this was supposed a very short joke but it just kept getting longer. It’s unfortunate that it’s at the expense of another victim but I do love the pure joy on Weiss’s face. Even if I hate him I have to reluctantly admit that Jacques is incredible at controlling conversations and twisting words in favor. He also only gave wine to the people he wanted on his side and purposefully gave food to everyone except Penny. I think it’s so well done how they represent Winter’s anxiety, anger, impatience and hatred during the conversation. It’s so twisted and makes my skin crawl seeing how Jacques twists Winter’s words in his favor. It’s sad to see how her childhood abuse has affected Winter and how Penny thinks it’s being implied that she can’t understand her feelings because she is a robot. I’m so glad Winter clarifies immediately though. The relationship between these 2 characters is so well done and interesting. Especially the ironic thing of the person you think would be more human being more robotic and vice versa. This or the next episode was also the where the creation/observation of Jacques using a clip on tie came into being thanks to a lengthy Discord discussion that started to be recorded halfway through. It was so funny and also unimportant to the story that the writers ended up officially making it canon. I love seeing the pictures/portraits of different parts of the Schnee family in the halls especially the grandfather. All of us RWBY fans were so interested in seeing/finding out more about Mama Schnee since she was mentioned in volume 4 and especially once we got back to Atlas so this was great although great isn’t exactly how you would describe it. This might not be the case since we know that she’s more aware but she says she couldn’t come down to Weiss’s party like that’s what she thought it was for possibly it was just her maybe remembering that birthday party when Jacques confirmed why exactly he married her. This is such a great and depressing window into the broken and abusive nature of this family. It’s so sad that Willow had all these cameras to potentially capture any abuse going on as well as if she ever wanted to get out of the situation and this means she considered it and never did for one reason or another. The whole thing about Whitley being brought up is so great because so many viewers just saw him as a copy of Jacques and just hated him but some of us like myself definitely disliked his actions but were able to recognize that he was a victim too although I’m certain that was Jacques’s as an abuser to keep him isolated. The line of you left him here… With us is chilling. The hard cut to Watts certainly makes for a dramatic scene for the end of the episode. He was probably waiting for the perfect moment to turn off the heat but I do have to wonder how long he had to wait on this roof LOL. Fun background detail is the billboard behind Watts seems to be propaganda for Atlas Academy and might feature a more official looking Flynt and Neon it's not important or ever been confirmed but it’s cool/interesting. I feel so bad for the kid since he thinks he’s going to have some snow fun when we know how dangerous the cold in Atlas really is especially for those without aura. Episode 9 comment coming soon.

Supermonaman

This episode is really well done. Something cool is the reason they had the heaters give off such a noticeable orange glow is so that it would be even more noticeable once it turned off. I like the detail that Pietro is giving shelter to people in his clinic. The people asking very unsure if Atlas would turn off the heat on purpose is chilling and also showcases how it is a great way of causing division considering Atlas doesn’t have the best track record of caring about Mantle. I really love the dialogue of what people intend and what they do are different. As soon as Jacques starts freaking out being informed about the heat it’s very obvious he had no idea about this and was only being used. The way he deflects is good voice acting. I absolutely love the way Weiss shows up in the darkest hour acting like a private eye and like a lawyer from the video game ace attorney. It’s so satisfying to see Weiss revealing everything and getting her father in deep shit. Also damn James is intimidating. It’s hilarious and shows just how terrible of a person Jacques is that the rest of his scene with Watts is even worse than what we originally saw. Also that laugh of his is so scummy. Weiss arresting and then asking if she can arrest her father is probably the peak comedic moment in the show to me at least. The rioting makes sense because they need the fire to survive however it is very dangerous to be using raw dust like this so it makes sense that the soldiers want to stop them as well. It’s so fitting that Watts and Tyrian are just watching this chaos unfold. The robots here are older models and don’t do much against Grimm because they are also meant to represent Atlas not caring as much about Mantle. Also the 1st scene of the flying Grimm is a reference to Jurassic Park. Seeing Jacques put up such an flimsy defense and only being sorry because he got caught is infuriating but seeing him punished and reprimanded by Ironwood, Winter, Weiss and everyone basically while the original Schnee patriarch’s portrait is staring/glaring down at him is so cathartic. It’s not much and doesn’t make up for it really all but at least he tried to get control back of the heating but it makes sense with his personality that he didn’t consider this might happen. Also at least he seems like he’s worried about the people the tiniest bit because no matter how horrible he may be the idea of people suffering excruciating deaths is too much even for him to not care about. I think it’s really uplifting to see the kids help James when he’s about to have a breakdown and convince him to help Mantle. I think it’s great that they decide to tell James the entire truth now that they trust him a lot more. Also that Ruby/Oscar scene is so awkward and adorable I love it even if I don’t ship them. I’m glad the Council members and Robyn know more now but it must be really scary hearing about Salem for the 1st time. It was such a relief that James learning everything while a shock didn’t stop him from wanting to focus on helping. The line of him not wanting more surprises shows how on the edge he is but really humanizes him as well. I love the design of the Teryx being a combination of a velociraptor and pterodactyl and just looks really cool even if it’s also terrifying. Also fun fact it was originally called a Pterroryx but it sounded too much like terrorist when said out loud. I like the call back to Jaune being airsick from all the way back in the beginning of volume 1. I really love all the fun dialogue between the characters as they are jumping out of the ship. Finally Neo showing up was something a good amount of people guessed this but there were doubts because in this fandom every time a character is not talking and acting a little weird people always think it’s Neo and it’s usually not true. Also I love her skipping and other well animated movements so much every time we see her. I like the ominous end of the episode because if you don’t have some sort of stakes and villainous stuff a story especially one like this it isn’t as good in my opinion. I really loved these reactions. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

2021-06-26 21:27:34 This episode is really well done. Supermonaman

Also this doesn't really fit the episodes but a lot of people find Willow as well as the other moms in RWBY to be very attractive and beautiful. One reaction channel was saying that Jacques was for only marrying her for the family name and money and should have been better to her which is something any decent person would have done.

About the first ep: I couldn't agree more, this episode is just so well done when it comes to things like the visuals of the mansion, exploring the nature of familial abuse, etc. I also love that the clip-on tie debate became canon LOL!!!! It's so nice to finally meet Mama Schnee after waiting so long. But so sad that we get to see even more of the messed up dynamic of the household like you said. I didn't notice the billboard, but that's so cool!!! Also, the thought of Watts on the roof waiting for the perfect moment is pretty hilarious lol!!! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

About the second ep: that's interesting about the orange glow, and definitely a nice detail that Pietro was giving people shelter! Everything about how Jacques is taken down is just so epic. I agree about how well the VA did. And Ironwood is kinda scary for sure lol, even when he's on "our" side. I'm glad they told him too! And the Ruby/Oscar moment was so cute no matter how one interprets it - ship or friendship. That's interesting about the name issues too! I love Neo and all her well animated glory lol. I'm so happy you enjoyed my reactions!!!! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, and for your support/encouragement! And for your patience (sorry for the delay)!!! :D
