Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 3 of the final season of AoT!  Oh man....just when I thought I understood Reiner, they go and throw an episode like this at me!
I legit think he may end up one of my favorite characters!!!  To think, he did all that just to try and reunite his family...only to find out the cruel reality of the situation, and STILL have to be a warrior.  Then, he finds out he got in somewhat by mistake...!!!  It's really no wonder he suffered such a split!  Good lord!!!  When they cut to that scene of him with the gun....my heart just snapped in two.  Last but not least, can someone clue me in as to WHAT THE FUDGE happened here at the end?!?!?  Am I insane?!  Am I hearing/seeing things?!  What a crazy ride it's been so far, can't wait for more!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

You are not insane. Just listen to the voice again.

Love how they show Reiner encouraging Eren by telling him to keep moving forward just to have Eren say those same words to Falco.

Probably the best (and hardest) episode so far. And for the people complaining (why tho) about the CGI ruining the show, here we have a female titan without CGI ! Althought that might be more the exception than the rule. Annie wasn't listening to Berthold, because she was busy crushing that bug, the little psycho :p Do you remember the cover story Berthold told to Eren and Armin in season 1, about how the titans reached their village ? It was this guy story, the one that hung himself. Ahah, the part with Kenny seems to confuse a lot of people. Of course Kenny is not Annie's father. Because first, it is impossible, and second it is "obviously" bullshit served by Annie to escape the situation. She was actually trailing Kenny in order to find info on the king. But hey, you don't trail Kenny, he trails you :p Another layer (several even) for Reiner's broken psyche... Everything in his life is fucked up, everything. Be it the things he did, or all of what was thrown at his face. Poor guy, this back and forth with him encouraging Eren to go forward (which is literaly Eren's drive) and present day's Reiner about to end his misery... DANG. And what a save, if Falco didn't punch that wall at that time... And not like a few minutes later, not so far away of Reiner, Falco is speaking (listening, really) to someone with a really grim outlook of the state of the things. Someone with a voice and eyes that you recognize ALRIGHT ! The implications MOUHAHAH !

This is a heartbreaking episode, Reiner's life is just a tragedy. He wished to become a hero so he could unite with his family. He was always the underdog but somehow got close to achieving his dream by being selected as a warrior. Then his father wiped away the hope of mending his family. He wanted to become a hero for that reason, but now he got left with just being a hero for the sake of the world and found purpose in that. But soon after he learned that he never had what it takes to be the hero and it was Marcel persuading the military that made him into a warrior. Moments later he also witnessed Marcel's death and blamed himself for it. The only thing left for him was his mother waiting at home so he devoted himself to going back home by completing the mission. That meant coercing his teammates and throwing away who he was to become a replacement for Marcel. You can see how lost he was when he was breaking down the wall, with shattered dreams and no sense of purpose, but he pushed forward. After he adopts the older brother mentality, he inevitably gets close to his squad, while still being the devoted warrior leader among Annie and Bertoldt, which absolutely split his personality to the point of a mental disorder. He was motivating the soldiers from the 104th, as well as motivating Annie and Bert. That's why Annie called him out that she can't stand his face, when he started talking about her behavior, she was disgusted by the person Reiner is. I believe he realized that but just apologized for the burden he places on her, while taking on his burden. You know how much he breaks down when he revealed he was a titan back in season 2. But he chose to push on with his choice, that he made as a kid when he did not understanding anything. The suicide attempt is the aftermath of him reminiscing all these memories and the prospect of going back to the island. If you listen to the monologue at the end, "people who push themselves into hell see something beyond. Hope or a different hell" For Reiner, he's just been pushing from one hell to another. I honestly feel so bad for him. His only thing worth living for is to save Gabi, Falco and his other close ones from pushing themselves into the same hell. I honestly think he's beyond redemption for what he did on Paradis, but he had no easy choice and no chance of happiness from the start. And ofcourse, for context, he was a 12 year old kid when most of this stuff happened....

This is just like the "Not yet, eh?" scenario all over again 😂

Your reaction at the end was so funny/awesome. Put a big smile on my face, haha. Also wondering if you noticed Eren, Mikasa, and Armin in the refugee building inside Wall Rose when Annie, B, and R were there too (after they broke the wall)? And yeah, as others pointed out the "keeping moving forward" thing is what R said to Eren, which is neat. Loved your reaction, you have so much empathy for the characters.

They couldnt fit this into the episode because of the time limit they have but after Reiner and Annie's fight. Annie transforms into a titan and screams so that all the mindless titans in the area would follow her, as she runs to the wall whilst Reiner and Bertholdt cling to a rope tied around her neck. By the time they reach the wall Annie's exhausted since they were originally meant to switch between Annie and Marcel to cover the distance to the wall. So then Reiner switches with Annie, transforming into the armoured titan and holding her whilst she's basically passed out. We get to a panel of kid Bertholdt looking up at how huge Wall Maria is and wondering if he'll even be able to destroy something so huge. Then after he transforms we get a close up of the colossal titans eye as he sees Eren, Armin and Mikasa looking up at him. That visual switch of perspective seeing it from the colossal titans perspective is something really cool which I wish they kept in the anime. Anyway whilst Bertholdt is doing that the titans Annie called catch up to them and Reiner has to desperately fight them off and protect Annie. That's why Bertholdt is so shocked when he sees the Smiling Titan but weirdly enough it completely ignores him and just walks past him which confuses him even more. I understand why the anime cut this sequence since it's not key to the story but I think having the entirety of the events of episode 1 shown from the opposite perspective as well as showing how desperate and unorganized the attack on Wall Maria was by these 3 children instead of a mastermind plan by some big villain like many thing back when they first see the colossal titan attack, really adds a lot to the story and makes it all hit a lot harder! After that there's also a scene of them during the few years they worked as refugee land workers before they joined the trainees. Basically they're discussing the intel they'd gained on the royal family, that King Fritz was a dummy figurehead with no actual power whilst the true royal family (the Reiss) are hidden somewhere. So they talk about how they can find them. Annie suggests trying to becomes servants of the royal family or marrying herself off to someone in the royal family to infiltrate the capital but says it wouldn't work since she has no charm. Since they know the King of the Walls is bound by some sort of vow to renounce war Annie suggests just getting things over and done with by destroying the other 2 walls. Reiner counters by saying that even though that would probably lure out the founding titan it may provoke the King enough to release the titans in the walls to trample the world. Hence why Reiner suggests taking the slower method of joining the military and slowly marching forward by gaining info. This is also why Annie is tailing Kenny later in the episode since she's sneaking around the capital, stalking Military Police figures to try and get clues to where the King is. But after Kenny catches her she tells Reiner that she's reached her limit and that she won't be able to get any further if Kenny is around. Finally adding on to Reiner's suggestion to destroy Wall Rose in their last conversation, in the manga he goes into more details saying they should attack the day after the graduation ceremony since the Survey Corps will be going beyond the walls that day so the training Corps will be forced into action if they attack and that means during the chaos they can disappear, either pretending to be dead, or blending in to the swarm of refugees heading into Wall Sina, or if they all make it into the top 10 they can continue being soldiers and just join the military police in the interior. Which is cool because that ties all the way back to that scene in season 1 where Eren and the others are working on the walls, talking about joining the survey corps right before the Colossal Titan seemingly randomly transforms out of nowhere. What at the time seems like a random scene forced in for shock value just as a cool way to have the protagonist face off with the big bad guy the second he's done with training actually has a full on explanation as to why it happened, way later into the story where it all ties together, That's why I love how Isayama writes his story, he barely lets a single plot thread or detail slip his mind and makes everything make sense and have an explanation within the story.

These are just a few of the major cuts they made to this flashback but if you feel like checking out the whole thing in the manga I'll leave a link since it's one of the best points in the series imo and one of the best fictional backstories I've ever seen. You can read chapters 94, 95 and 97 and 30 pages of chapter 97. https://ww7.readsnk.com/chapter/shingeki-no-kyojin-chapter-094/ https://ww7.readsnk.com/chapter/shingeki-no-kyojin-chapter-095/ https://ww7.readsnk.com/chapter/shingeki-no-kyojin-chapter-096/ https://ww7.readsnk.com/chapter/shingeki-no-kyojin-chapter-097/

The level at which Reiner is broken is hard to even put into words. Being used as a tool by his mother to raise her status to Marleyan telling him it'll bring their family back together despite her knowing full well his father wanted nothing to do with them. Which Reiner learns first hand after meeting him in person after all the years of training and perseverance he went through to be able to meet him. After learning that his whole life purpose of reuniting his family is a lie, he latches onto the next one, being a hero, a chosen warrior who will save the world from the island devils. Yet that purpose is also shattered the very same day, learning from Marcel that he wasn't even supposed to be chosen and only was because Marcel downplayed his brother so much to the military that they chose him instead. Reiner was literally just used as a sacrificial scapegoat to save his brother. And there goes Reiner's second and last purpose. This only worsens when the morning after Marcel is eaten, saving Reiner right after telling him that he's the reason he's even there in the first place. Reiner blanks out and runs away immediately as far as he can. A far cry from the hero he was proclaiming himself to be just a tiny bit earlier. With Marcel gone, Annie tells him the mission is basically hopeless and that he needs to take the blame and die for causing this. Reiner's sense of self and worth is already dead and gone at this point and after having his skull bashed in by Annie and repeatedly told how useless he is, his mental solution is to simply give up his own identity and become somebody else, Marcel. It's here we can see one of the origins of Reiner's split warrior/persona personality before he even started living with the people on Paradis. Reiner was broken from day 1 of the mission. Reiner then spends the next 5 years trying to be the best leader he can be to Bertholdt and Annie by trying to imitate Marcel as much as possible. This morphs into Reiner's soldier persona, the supportive, dependable, kind big brother figure he acts around the 104th and genuinely begins to believe he is as his dissociative personality worsens the longer he spends there. All whilst snapping out of it in his talks with Annie and Bertholdt where he acts like some tough, decisive leader to them that he was never cut out to be. But hey he fakes it until he makes it, not only convincing himself of his act but also Eren who openly admires him and wants to be like him more than anyone. Reiner gives him advice at one of the lowest points in Eren's life, to keep moving forward, this is the very same advice that leads Reiner to his current situation sat with a gun in his mouth ready to blow his brains out. It's no coincidence the scenes of him saying that are perfectly aligned with the sequence of him loading the gun and getting ready to kill himself. When Reiner returns from Paradis, he's suffering from severe survivors guilt being the only one to make it back, especially after being the one who made them continue the mission instead of turning back, trying to take responsibility by making himself the new leader to Annie and Bertholdt. Still having nightmares of Bertholdt's defeat in Shiganshina. He's now made to raise and watch these kids who are about to go down the exact same path as he did with nothing he can do to stop it besides trying to save his cousin Gabi from suffering the way he did at the cost of another kid Falco who he obviously sees himself in. No one in Marley understands him or has any idea what happened on the island, he has to lie straight faced to his family about the "devils" he met there since if he doesn't it could get them all killed. The only time he looks even remotely happy is the little smiles/smirks he has when he thinks back on his time on Paradis, like when Porco provokes him about he acted like some strong, reliable figure when he was there, to which Reiner just smiles and agrees with him, which throws Porco off entirely. And with his family where when they start talking about how awful and evil the devils on Paradis, Reiner has to physically cover his mouth with his hand to hide his smile at how absurd and wrong what they're saying. After all even though his mind was splitting between two realities, and he was faced with the burden of saving the entire human race and leading the warriors, those years he spent with the 104th in training were without a doubt the best of his life. And that is so unbelievably sad. Done with this long rant. Just wanted to word vomit this since I see a lot of people condense Reiner's depression to just a couple key points when there's far more layers, and negative things that have all piled on him throughout his entire life, all building up to the tragic crescendo we see in this episode with him an inch a way from blowing his brains out. The only thing stopping him being the realization that he still has a duty to watch over those kids in the 2 years he has left.

And we (me at least) thank you for this "rant". This is really the best description/explanation I have seen about Reiner !

This was better done in the manga as there is no voice for Eren, and though he tries to sound older he still sounds like Eren (not a problem in the manga) people were debating for months if that was Eren. What do you do against an enemy you know nothing about? Gather intel. As for the eye and the leg, people are confused why they didn't grow back. If you recall when in the 2nd season that titan bit Reiner's arm he wrapped it up and later healed it instantly. With enough control you could say make one eye regenerate instead of both (like annie) or do what reiner did. Also Falco is related to Grice from the end of season 3, he was the patriot Grisha was treating, and the one pushed off the wall for the titans to chase.

Also, finally getting to best girl Pieck.

Remember when I told u that I wanted to say something?!? I actually suspected that was Eren from last episode. The showed someone with long hair opserving Reiner from a roof when he first met the warrior candidates at the pier! It was at the end of the scene, like someone was watching them, so I kept my eyes open for long hair dudes lol. So then when Falco helped this "long hair dude" who was posing as a PTSD patient with the traumatized soldiers, this "long hair dude" was wearing his arm band in THE WRONG ARM!!! so I re-watched the scene, he was the only one who showed no reaction to the douchy attempt to trigger their trauma by the Marlyan douchy commander. And I just realized that this is the first time I'm on the same boat as u since I'm not a manga reader. I used to hate Reiner tbh, and didn't believe anyone could change my opinion on him but now I also like him lol. I feel sorry for him, he was dealt a bad hand from the start and got nothing but setbacks all the way until he revealed his identity to Eren. Now he's just a mess! And btw I had my suspicion on who was the guy buying the newspaper in the first episode. I think its someone we know.... And u should know who it is. I THINK, but once u see it again I think u will know too. Remember its 4 or 5 years later 👍 great reaction as always

kamenriderhime

Yeessss so true! Was so blindsided by the whole Eren thing that I didn't make that connection. Thanks!

kamenriderhime

So true!!! Ah nice, did not realize the female titan had no CG here! Haha, well, I'm not a big fan of bugs myself so I'm no one to judge Annie lol! OHHHHHH they took that guy's cover story?! Did not make that connection! Wow! Yes I had no clue about the scene with Kenny haha, I could kinda tell it was supposed to be Kenny, yet the father thing was not adding up. Thanks for explaining! Good to know it was just a quick fun cameo and Annie doing recon work. Oh man, you are so right about Reiner. That encouragement and drive he instilled in Eren, and here he is completely hopeless and about to end it. RIGHT?!?!?! Falco officially has the best timing in the world lol. YES, I actually recognized someone for once hahah!!! Oh man, the implications indeed!! Thanks for all the info!

kamenriderhime

YAY!! Thank you so much for this!!! LOL also glad you enjoy the rants!!! I get very paranoid/feisty during my rants, good to know it's enjoyable to watch!!! XD

kamenriderhime

So true!!!! :( You can absolutely see how the split occurred, with him being the big brother figure to our crew while also leading Annie and Bertholdt. Oh wow, so true that Reiner has just been going from one hell to another. So well put. And now all he's living for is preventing that for another group of kids. Right, he was a child who was clearly broken in every way, still doesn't justify what happened or bring back the people killed in the Armored Titan attack, but still....!!! I am right there with you feeling awful for him.

kamenriderhime

Hahaha thanks!!!!! I'm so glad!!! I did notice them actually but sure my brain could not keep up enough to point it out!! Ahhh yes, was so taken aback by recognizing Eren that the connection between the wording went over my head! >.< So appropriate, though. Thank you so much!!! I really do feel a deep connection with these characters! So happy to hear you enjoyed my reaction!! ^_^

kamenriderhime

Ah I could see that, fortunately I did not recognize the voice at all until the very end haha. Ohhhhh that makes so much sense!!! I figured as much with the regeneration, after a few years I'm sure Eren has mastered ways to get around that. I actually remembered Grice last episode!!! Not entirely, but the name rang a bell lol. I can't wait to see more of Pieck! Thanks for all the info!!!

kamenriderhime

Ahhhhhh nice! Way to go on catching that stuff early! And the armband!!!! I seriously would not have even paid any attention to the long haired guy, there was so much else going on, excellent work picking that up! So true about Reiner!!! They do a great job of making him so hard to hate after you see all he's gone through!! Ahhhhh yes the newspaper guy! I feel like someone had mentioned Jean, because he was blonde.....but blonde could also be my absolute best boy Armin as well!!!! <333333 I can't wait to see!!! Thank you for your compliments on my reaction, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!!!!!!!

Supermonaman

A lot of people have posted comments that reflect my thoughts on the episode but I really want to post a short comment of my own. It was an absolutely incredible episode and the whole seeing things from the opposite perspective was so cool. One thing I wanted to say is that I think the longer you have 1 of the 9 Titans the more it negatively affects you like making you look way older than you are and eventually making you sickly perhaps based on how often you use the abilities as well. One interesting thing I want to say is that when Annie crushes the grasshopper/cricket not sure which people have compared it to how she killed Petra. However it reminded me of how in Mikasa’s backstory she saw a bug getting eaten in a spider’s web and it brought her to the conclusion that the world is beautiful but cruel just an interesting comparison I thought of. Also this episode was so sad and heartbreaking but so well written. I love Reiner and the other warriors so much and while I agree with people that they are probably not redeemable at this point I just don’t understand some people who can’t see the nuance of the situation or don’t have sympathy/empathy for the warriors. They are just such interesting and well-written characters. Also you’re not crazy even though I know people told you but that’s Eren 100%. I have trouble recognizing most Japanese VA’s but I will always recognize Yuki Kaji’s voice it’s just so iconic. And if that’s not what makes you realize his speech about freedom and war and the focus on his eyes should tell you all you need to know. Also don’t want to make you sad but his eyes looked even more lifeless than at the end of season 3 so who knows what he’s gone through since then. Finally funny story but I had a crazy moment last episode where I immediately was like that’s Eren when we 1st saw him. Also just in case someone else didn’t say this I think even though it’s not said out loud I think people who can turn into Titans at will can choose whether or not they heal themselves which explains the missing leg and injured eye. I loved your reaction so much and I can’t wait to see the next episode as well as your and other people’s reactions. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

kamenriderhime

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! Ahh yes that makes sense about a titan having adverse effects, that might explain why I thought Zeke was so much older at first. Ohhhhhhhh I knew there was some significance to the bug crushing, but that's especially morbid!!!! Good comparison about the correlation to Mikasa's backstory, too. So true that there's not much that could redeem characters like Reiner at this point, but they're still so interesting and sympathetic in lots of ways. Haha glad I'm not crazy!!! I love his VA, can't believe I didn't recognize him at first! Ohhhh such a good point that his eyes looked even more lifeless. Thanks for explaining that about the healing! And that's so funny, you totally called it way early! Thanks so much for your compliments!!! Hope you love my future reactions!! :D

Floweyyyy

(Arriving late, because I had to cancel my subscription on patreon, but now I'm back) Glad you managed to understand Reiner's character better, but I must admit that I didn't really like the way Reiner's backstory was adapted in the anime. They made everything happen in a single episode and in the manga his backstory have a duration of something like 3-4 chapters(for you have a better idea, in the anime they usually adapt 1,5 - 2 chapters per episode, but here they cut and rushed so many things 💀). In the manga things happened in a slow and pleasant pace, you are able to understand and feel the things from his backstory much better while you read it. The scene of Reiner's suicide attempt at the end I was left a little down. I will not say that it had no impact, but in the manga it's a scene that you feel much more for Reiner (along with that memory of Reiner and Eren talking, It's shown Reiner having small memorys of his last moments with Bert, his monologue about them being just kids who didn't know anything and others things) and also I felt that in the manga it was a scene that shocked more when you acattualy get to see Reiner putting a gun in his own mouth and almost pulling the trigger, idk(I probably felt that way because of the cuts and the strange pace, but happy that I am seeing some anime-only like you feeling emotions and understanding Reiner's character, even with so many cuts and rushed things in this episode). Reiner's desire to be a warrior and a hero is something that was put into him by his mother, along with a desire to bring his family together, as you understood(the anime cut things that help to make it more clearer, but glad you understood). Also, I don't know if that got so clear in the anime, but do you remember Porco talking to Reiner, as soon as he wakes up in episode 61, about him seeing in Ymir's memories that Reiner seemed to act like his brother, Marcel? And here we have this scene where Reiner tell Annie that if they need Marcel to do the mission, then he can and will be Marcel. And also Reiner promising Marcel, as he hugs Annie and Bertholdt, that he would become the warrior that he should have been. This is something important for the "split personality" issue that we saw in Reiner. When Reiner was in his "soldier" form he acted like an big brother to everyone, someone who had the trust of all his companions(the plot indicates that Marcel was someone like this in the warriors's group). There is also another reason that led Reiner to act like this(acting like a "big brother"), but that’s something that we’ll talk about in the future. Anyway, on the other hand, when he was in his "warrior" form Reiner acted as a leader(since Marcel was no longer there and he had sworn to fill his place and back in season 1 - 3 Reiner was the person, before Zeke shows up, who acted more like the leader of the RBA trio), he acted like the warrior he believed he should be(again, the promise he made to Marcel to become a warrior and that he would not fail again this time). And finally, it's good that you managed to get the parallels of Eren and Reiner and about Reiner being the "protagonist on the other side". An interesting thing to note is how Reiner saw himself in Eren when they were training to join the army of the walls(in that same memory where Reiner sees Eren falling and then crying for not being good enough, he has a brief flash of himself in the same situation as a child). In season 1 it's shown how Eren was the least talented among the main cast characters. Everyone had something that spotlight to joining the army and fight the titans, even Armin. But Eren was this normal guy with no special talents to help fight the Titans. As you saw, Reiner was also someone like that, he shouldn't have become a warrior, it just happened because Marcel managed to convince the army that Reiner was a better choice than his brother(this is also something clearer in the manga, since we get to actually see Reiner's moments in training to become a warrior and how he always was behind someone in any test other than loyalty). That's why Reiner always helped and encouraged Eren when they are friends. And it was probably for reasons like this that Eren managed to reach the top 10 of the best cadets at that time, he always had his friends and Reiner, who keep helping and encouraging him. Another nice thing to note is also how both Eren and Reiner wanted to be heroes and join the fight, even if it meant throwing their lives away. However, it is interesting to note a difference here: Reiner was a victim of propaganda and brainwashing, in addition to having a mother who incited these desires on him. Eren on the other hand was not victim of any propaganda trying to manipulate him to kill himself for his country and he had a mother who wanted to protect him from those desires that Eren himself created to join the scouts, because she thought he would just kill himself like this(which is what would happen, as we saw at the beginning of the anime, if Eren hadn’t taken Grisha’s titan)

kamenriderhime

No worries, glad you're back! Thank you so much for sharing these in-depth thoughts! It's always interesting to learn how much more detailed the manga is compared to the anime; although like you said, despite things being severely cut, I'm glad I still got the emotional impact of it all! Sorry to hear the cuts made it a little less enjoyable for you, that's totally understandable considering your background reading the much more detailed manga! Also, thanks for explaining about the split beginning to take place as soon as Reiner had to "become" Marcel for the group. I do remember that scene when Reiner woke up and Galliard was mentioning his brother!!! And so true that Eren and Reiner are similar in many ways, but a main difference being the brainwashing Reiner endured as well as the differences in their mothers' goals/treatment of them. I really appreciate all the info!!!!!! :D
