Hey everyone!  HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!!!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 1 of the final season of AoT!  Wow, did not see it coming that they'd drop us....well....on the other side of the sea, following characters who are really cute and likeable, but who are fighting on the opposing side of this war.  What a great touch to get us invested in them and not even show a familiar face until far into the episode!  And NO sign of any of our heroes/scouts/etc.!!!!  So, the war is over?!  But surely, there will be some conflict coming...!!  I was so surprised at where this ep took us, I cannot WAIT to see more!!!  It's good to be back, everyone!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

(And my comment disappeard after a modifiction. I really don't understand patreon sometimes) HO BOY ! Here we go again, I am so HAPPY ! Just to clear a point, you mentionned several times "our crew" (I want to see them too :p ). The people the Marleyan were fighting are not "our crew" (obviously), and, as far as we know, they are not "our side". The war that ended here is against a completely different nation (well, an alliance of nations of the Middle East as they said) that got to war against Marley. So (as far as we know, again), Paradis Island is not involved. This is no spoiler, they mentioned that Paradis Island operation (retrieving the Fouding titan) is on hold (or was on hold because they had to deal with this war first), but the confusion is understandable, don't worry. What started this war, as this commander said, is the lost of the female titan, and probably especially the colossal titan. Just image what would have happened if they had the colossal : no need for several mindless titans, just drop ONE Berthold, and boom, the fort is gone. "The greatest ability of all", Reiner said in season 3... With the loss of this two (one being a nuke...), the others nations saw a weakness in Marley (amplified with weapons far more effective against titan), and used that to go to war. Because... reasons ? The mid episode card said that Marley is a military dictatorship that used its army and 7 of the 9 intelligent titans to crush other nations, so it is safe to assume that Marleyan neighbors are not really fond of Marley. Also they seemed to share the same hatred against Eldians, judging by this soldier reaction at being touch by Falco. That being said. Isn't it beautiful !?! Mappa studio really nailed it, it looks clean ! They used A LOT of CGI for the titans, but it was of far better quality than previous seasons. Well it was not Mappa that did the CGI but you get the point. Overall, there is still this AoT feel, and I hope it will continue on this trend. This first episode really is a formidable start, and I am really glad to be able to see your reaction ;) It was really enjoyable ! And now, let start this excruciating wait of one week ! :D

I loved your little dance to the new opening song XD I actually really like it too, it's so different but it's also got a dancey vibe which is nice :P I just found you on YouTube last month and caught up on all of your S1-S3 reactions and it's so awesome to enjoy it with you at the same time now! I felt you were very observant and emotive which I loved. So interesting the way they started off this season, now it's just crazy to imagine the kinds of things that could happen if these new characters ever meet the ones we've come to know already! Looking forward to the epic journey ahead... This episode was soooo unexpected and exciting!

I'm not sure if you're aware but peace treaties happen at the end of practically every official war. Every major war in real history has at least one. That doesn't mean both sides immediately just work towards peace together and live in harmony. Peace treaties usually result in the victors of the war exploiting the hell out of the losing countries with conditions that they're unable to refuse since they can no longer fight back. A prime and most famous example of this is the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War 1 where the allies imposed so many unbelievably harsh conditions on Germany that completely collapsed the German economy and ironically is one of the main reasons why World War 2 happened only 20 years later since the Treaty of Versailles basically made it inevitable that another major conflict would happen. Also yes taking in soldiers who can't fight any more as prisoners of war is an actual rule of war in reality. But as we saw with Gabi who broke multiple rules of war in this episode, taking off uniform, pretending to surrender, etc, the rules of war are barely ever seriously followed in reality. All countries commit war crimes. As people often like to make the joke that the Geneva convention is more like the Geneva suggestions since no countries actually strictly adhere to it in any war.

I don't want to leave a superlong comment about this episode but I thought it was awesome how they started the season. I think you could have seen it coming but like you I didn't but the perspective switch makes total sense. In my opinion it's to give you a better perspective of the enemy and to understand them more. I think this is because a major theme of the show is that things are not just black and white, good and evil but somewhere in between. As well as showing the darker side of humanity which this episode did a good job of. The action and music speaks for itself although I think the opening is supposed to remind you of wartime propaganda and be eerie and dark as well as catchy. I'm glad it's very symbolic and doesn't give anything away. One thing I think you might have missed is that they say the original attack on Paradis Island that failed happened 9 years ago but at the end of season 3 it's only been 5 years since that 1st attack so if you do the math there has been a four-year time skip. Which I actually think is good because it means the scouts and paradis island have had time to prepare for war part of which was probably to build ships that could cross the sea and planning. They are probably still woefully unprepared but they now have more of a chance. I loved the reaction and I can't wait for more. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

I have 2 solid theories and I promise there are no spoilers as I am anime only and just as blind as you. I think the Titan they call the Jaw looks similar to Ymir's Titan form and fights similarly so I think this is the person who ate her and this is the new way that form looks. I hope I am wrong and by some miracle Ymir is alive but unfortunately I very much doubt it. And my 2nd theory is the person the show focuses on in the very last scene is Jean who has infiltrated Marley for an unknown amount of time I just think from what little we see that it looks like him and also makes sense for the scouts to go for a more subtle/espionage plan considering how powerful Marley is. I'm curious what you think of these 2 theories. :-) <3

As an anime only watcher; I get the impression that Marley, has used the 7 titan powers they had to dominate the other nations of the world having nothing to do with our main crew on the island. The 4 year war was not with Paradis Eldians. Which is why the Middle Eastern war prisoner that Falco, captured was disgusted to be touched by an Eldian. Also, as others have suggested already; I'm guessing that Jaw is probably Ymir's, titan:)

Manny

Awesome start to a season!

kamenriderhime

Oh no, sorry about your comment! If that ever happens again, let me know and I can send you your comment (Patreon emails me copies of all my comments). Oh boy, I feel so silly that I got confused about who the war was with! I just assumed that the "east" they were referring to had to be wherever our heroes were located before they moved out beyond the walls. :/ Makes much more sense!! The talk of hating Eldians/wanting to prove they were "good" Eldians might have helped confuse me. I do miss our crew though! And yes, that would have been a short war if they had the Colossal! The animation does look pretty sweet! Thank you so much for watching with me! Can't wait for next week!!!!

kamenriderhime

Haha thank you!!! XD Awesome, thank you so much for finding me on YouTube and joining my Patreon fam!!! Really happy to hear you've been enjoying my reactions! ^_^ Yes, such a unique start to the season, dropping us into a whole different place with folks we don't know! It took me by surprise too! Can't wait to see more!

kamenriderhime

I wasn't aware actually! That's interesting! Wow, that's kind of bleak to think that the rules aren't followed in reality as well! :/ Something to think about. Thanks for the info!

kamenriderhime

Yes, such a great started, and I definitely didn't see it coming, although I do see how it was hinted at a bit in the trailer now that I think about it! So incredibly true that dropping us on the "enemy" side is to show us that there is no strict black or white when it comes to war, the people involved, etc. Ah, thanks for clearing that up about the time jump, I was confused! Very true that it will give our crew time to prepare more, although I do worry now that I've seen what they're up against! Oooohhh great theory about the Jaw Titan! We know Ymir was dying or expecting to die at the end of the last season, so very possible Galliard is the one who ate her and got the power. Ahhhhh I love the Jean theory as well!!! That would be really intense and I hope it's true!

kamenriderhime

Got it! Sorry for the confusion, it's been cleared up a bit for me here in the comments. That makes so much more sense about why the soldier was disgusted!!! I knew there was stuff that didn't make sense at the time but that's what my comments are for, thanks everyone lol :D So it's safe to say that Marley has some...issues....with other nations besides just the Paradis Island crew!!!!

kamenriderhime

David Caine - I don't see your post here anymore but thank you so much for the info and glad you enjoyed my commentary!!!!!!

Yaaay! This is my fav arc in aot, the way how the tables turn(as you can see, we are following the warriors POV and we have this new characters from their side too) and we should finally understand more about characters like Reiner and co. also, I'm so happy that they're finally making Reiner look beautiful in the anime as he is in the manga, the previous studio, WIT, didn't drew him well in season 1-3(that's also why Reiner looks different, besides the fact that he's 21 years old now). As for example: His nose was drawn in the wrong way in most scenes, the eyeshadow that WIT made for Reiner in the anime wasn't good, the hair was drawn in a bad way too and among other details that they did badly... (Ok, on the first chapters of the story in the manga the drawing and designs of the characters wasn't good too, but with time it improved VERY much and Reiner is so good there when the autor finally get to his design. Meanwhile, WIT didn't try to improve Reiner's design much to make him look more like the manga) Anyway, back to MAPPA, I think I still like Reiner's design better in the manga, but he's also very beautiful in this new season(and still much more closer to his design in the manga than WIT's Reiner was). As I said the previous studio drew him so badly in season 1-3, but MAPPA is finally doing justice to this man's beauty 😭😭😭😭

Floweyyyy

And yeah, we are 4 years after the battle of shiganshina(Season 3 Part 2). Reiner is different(with the beard and more older traits. You may notice that his voice actor is also making a slightly older and tired voice now, this has not only to do with his age, but also Reiner's mental state now, you will get to understand better what I mean in the future), he's a little older. He's 21 years old now(as I said in my other comment), in season 1-3 he was 17. Zeke doesn't look so different because he was already an adult in season 3(25 years old in Season 3 and now he's 29), but you can notice here that his hair is shorter, because he cut it, in season 3 his hair was longer(also, he took some of the volume out of his beard).

I compared these panels from the manga with the anime scenes from previous seasons, for you to take a look and getting what I'm saying(apparently the links don't work here, but just try to copy the link and use it that they should take you to an image comparing WIT's design and the manga's design for Reiner): 1: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/365007091460734988/786470068711718922/1.png?width=770&height=302 2: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/365007091460734988/786470186689626112/4.png 3: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/365007091460734988/786472734212227093/5.png 4: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/365007091460734988/786475335301595146/3.png 5: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/365007091460734988/786476208283582474/2.png

Also just remembered some fun trivia I like to bring up whenever someone is introduced to the new characters in this episode. Gabi's character design is based off some sketches Isayama (the manga author) did of a female version of Eren. Which you can see here https://myanimelist.net/featured/2176/Gender-Swapped_Sketches_of_Eren_Yeager_Result_in_New_Character And Falco's character design was based off Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad since Isayama is a huge fan of the series and has said he considers it a masterpiece in interviews before.

Adam Stinnett

When historia was reading the letter in s3 she saw flashes of memories. One was of Ymir being sacrificed so galliard would likely be the candiate that got the jaw titan as Ymir was not a "warrior".

kamenriderhime

Ohhh good call about the VA....that makes total sense. I noticed Zeke's new 'do and it's good to know how old Reiner is here. Thanks for all the info!

kamenriderhime

WHOA!!! That is such an awesome fun fact!!! WHAT?!?! that is awesome that he is such a huge fan of Breaking Bad!!! I'm always gonna think of Jesse now when I see Falco haha!!

SubjectiveTruth

I'm sorry, I just don't feel sympathy for the Eldians under Marley. To put the blame on people being oppressed and killed just like them (our guys) instead of the ones actually doing the oppressing is just something I cant understand. How does what happened in the past matter more than who is causing the problems today? They are good characters but I wont be conflicted at all if/when they go against our Eldians.

kamenriderhime

I totally get what you're saying! Looking at it with all the info, it's absolutely not right to blame those being oppressed instead of the oppressors. From my point of view, it seems like they've really been brainwashed by the "history" and ideals of the Marley nation, so although it's not right, I can get how they'd be conditioned to feel that way. I'll be curious to see if their mindset changes once/if they get more info and perspective on the situation!
