Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 18 of Vinland Saga!  Well, things REALLY escalated in this ep!  So far, Canute has been the only one on this show who really feels "good" enough to cheer for....and well....I think this world has finally changed him.  And no, he hasn't been turned cold or ruthless, but he has accepted some very....interesting...ideas about love that have skyrocketed him into King Mode!!!  That last scene....as much as I was worried about him, gotta say, he looked like a boss there!  Also, Thorfinn got airborne!!!
That can't be good!!!  I have no clue where things are going and if/when we will get to Vinland, but I'm having fun with the journey!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The kind of love the priest was talking about is called agape (uh-gah-pay). It is the kind of love that god is capable of. The ultimate example is the death of Jesus for the betterment of man. But yeah it's seen as the ultimate ideal of love, something we can never fully attain but can always reach for. Or to be more clear it’s kind of hard to survive a genuine showing of this love because it’s directly tied into the concept of self sacrifice. Thors managed to show this type of love before he died hence the parallels. Canute doesn't see himself as a god-like figure. He sees the opposite. He knows he can only do so much because he is only human but he will do whatever he can and no longer takes things on faith. He feels a sense of betrayal from god because of all that, like the lack of love. Hope that makes some type of sense. I think you pretty much understood the concepts after being confused initially, a lot of people never even get past that initial view of it. I was so curious how you would react to this one. Some really heavy themes.

Ah yes I have heard of the concept of agape love! That does make sense, thank you for explaining it! Yeah it took me a bit but I think I’m getting it now! This show is not afraid

The priests philosophy was Godly. The frustration in Canute left me in awe. Jesus's and Thors's sacrifices were for others. The best the rest can do is give back to the Earth. All the prayers & studying did not lead Canute any closer to that love. Everything Ragnar has done and given can't even be called love in God's eyes. "Something we'll never attain as long as we're alive. But you keep telling us to seek it." "Is there anyway to end ones suffering besides death?" He realized God isn't going to provide that love to us humans, or the realization of that love. "This man's soul cannot be saved through the trials you set for him". Canute's not going to take that sitting down. He's gonna resolve the world into a place of love, in the truest sense. All man knows how to do it fight. He isn't going to show that he's strong out of hostility and rage. Thors told Thorfinn he has no enemy. Canute's closer to Thors than Thorfinn in that way. It's a beautiful scene I must watch it again. ✨
